Mr. Howard Brown, Jr., 76, of Fernandina Beach, FL passed away Friday morning, August 29, 2008 at Quality Health of Fernandina Beach. Mr. Brown was born on February 19, 1932 in Philadelphia, PA, the son of the late Ruth and Howard Brown, Sr. He was a graduate of Ridley Township High School in Delaware County, PA. After graduation, Mr. Brown began work for theSun Oil Company/Sunoco in Pennsylvania and then opened up his own garage and car dealership in Paoli, PA and later another in Fort Washington, PA. Through his love of automobiles he began an extensive career in open wheel off road racing. During his racing career, Mr. Brown raced on the SCCA circuit throughout North America and Nassau, Bahamas. He later became a team member of many racing teams including, The Smothers Brothers Racing Team in California, David Hobbs Racing, and George Wintersteen Racing. In 1980, Mr. Brown and his wife, Juliet relocated to Fernandina Beach from Devon, PA where he began working for Paul Burns Real Estate and later for Caldwell Banker. He retired in 1997 where he continued his passion of working on automobiles. He was of Lutheran faith. He leaves behind his loving wife of 38 years, Juliet Brown of Fernandina Beach, FL, one son; James Howard Brown (Patricia) of Fernandina Beach, FL, three daughters; Diane Elizabeth Clark (Douglas) of Easton, MD, Emily Ruth Creese (Stephen) and Tracy Ann Kiley ( Kevin) both of St. Michaels, MD. A sister; Jane Brown Haske of New Smyrna Beach, FL, and one brother; Thomas Brown of Boothwyn, PA. Besides his parents, Mr. Brown was predeceased by a son, Gerald Charles Brown and a brother; William Brown. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 13, 2008 at 11:00 am in the Burgess Chapel of Oxley-Heard Funeral Home.
