Anne Elizabeth Sutton

Anne Elizabeth “Libby” Sutton, 94, passed away on December 29, 2016, at her home. Nicknamed “Boots” by her father, she was one of 10 children born to Jesse and Manie Mathilda (Colson) Jones. Growing up in Fernandina Beach, she attended local schools, and graduated from Fernandina Beach High School, Class of 1940. In July 1940, she eloped with George Robert Sutton, SR, and they initially made their home in Fernandina Beach. In 1947, they relocated to Yulee, and then to the community of Hedges a few years later, where she lived the remainder of her life. Over the years, she worked at a number of places, including Nell’s Kitchen, the food stamp office, and as owner of the Sutton Motel and Restaurant in Hedges.
Mrs. Sutton was known for her excellent cooking, gardens, and devotion to friends and family. She was a person of great integrity and a loving spirit. A member of Springhill Baptist Church, she lovingly referred to her Sunday School class as her “church family”.
Mrs. Sutton was predeceased by her parents, her husband George, her son Joel Sutton, her granddaughter Laura Schell, her brothers Bill and Edgar Jones, and her sisters Evelyn Moody, Marilyn Gordon, Mary Muller, and Martha Booker.
Mrs. Sutton is survived by her children George “Bobby” (Marian) Sutton, JR, Callahan, FL, Sheila Booth and Barbara Schell, Yulee, FL; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-granchildren; 3 great-great grandchildren; sisters Vivian Black, St George, UT, Dorothy Deering, Pottstown, PA, and Judy Beadle, Artesia, NM; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, January 20th, at 5 PM, at Springhill Baptist Church with Rev Jackie Hayes officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to breast cancer research, the American Heart Association, or the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
