Benjie L. Gaskill

January 2, 1945 - November 25, 2018     Age: 73

Benjie Lyons Gaskill joined her Lord in paradise on Sunday, November 25, 2018.

She was born January 2, 1945 and was a lifelong resident of Fernandina Beach, growing up in Old Town.

Benjie enjoyed nature and was an avid gardener. Every day, she would go out in her yard and feed the animals. It was like a Disney movie with the birds, squirrels, and animals suddenly appearing and surrounding her with appreciation..

Benjie was fun to be around. No one could tell a story quite like she did. She loved children, Christmas and the holidays.

She was devoted to her cherished son, Jeff, and her granddog, Kyle, held a special place in her heart. She was a member of the North 14th Street Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Daniel Ralph and Beatrice Lyons; the love of her life and husband of 52 years, Telford Ronnie Gaskill Sr.; their infant son, Telford Ronnie Gaskill Jr.; and her sisters, Jeanie Gaskil Sutton and Mary Helen Lyons.

Benjie leaves behind her beloved son, Jeffrey Ronnie Gaskill; brother, Tommy Lyons Sr. (Gayle); and nephews and nieces, Tommy Lyons Jr. (Reyna), Kim Lyons Willis (Tim), David Sutton (Neelie) and Diane Elizabeth Sutton, as well as many great-nephews and nieces and extended family members on the Outer Banks of North Carolina.

Visitation will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, November 30, 2018 in Burgess Chapel at Oxley-Heard Funeral Directors. The funeral service will begin at 11 a.m. with Brother Jeff Whitaker officiating. A graveside service will follow in Bosque Bello Cemetery.

Growing up with my cousin Benji was so much fun, she was such a tomboy, she played ball and marbles with all us boys. All of her cousins will miss her. She was such a sweet lady.

Whether she was rounding us all up for a game of bicycle tag, or a feast over on the spare lot, she got it all in place. A super cousin indeed. We’ll all miss her.

Words can not express the sadness in my heart. The memories I have from working with Benji at the India Bay Tea House to the many fishing trips we shared with her and Ronnie will be forever in my heart. We were blessed to be able to call her our friend. Continued Prayers to Jeff for strength and comfort during this difficult time.

Benjie and I worked together side by side at Walmart. I am so sad to hear of her passing. Benjie was a wonderful person to be around, always making me laugh and always brightening my day. I no longer live in Fernandina but would often drop in to see her and Ronnie. They both were very sweet couple and I know Ronnie is glad to have Benjie by his side once again. I will always cherish the memories we had together! Benjie was the BEST and she will greatly missed.
