Dennis Charles Allen

December 12, 1949 - November 2, 2018     Age: 68

Dennis Charles Allen, 68, of Fernandina Beach passed away unexpectedly at his home Friday, November 2, 2018.

A Fernandina Beach native he was a son of the late Thomas Raymond and Jeannette Casper Allen. Dennis graduated from Fernandina Beach High School and served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War.

For over thirty years Dennis was a loyal and beloved employee of Publix.  He began working for Publix when the Island Walk Shopping Center store opened and continued there until his passing.  His “can do” attitude and helpful spirit made him a joy to work with.  He was always helpful to customers and in so many ways was the embodiment of “Customer Service”.

Dennis was the beloved brother of Edward Allen of Titusville, FL. Edward’s wife, Gretchen was more than just a “Sister in Law” to him. She loved and cared for him as much as Edward did from the time she came into his life as Edward’s wife.

In addition to Edward and Gretchen and several extended family members, Dennis leaves behind a faithful companion, Chipper, his beloved Jack Russell terrier. Chipper was always with him and brought much joy and companionship to him over the years.

Dennis will be laid to rest, with military honors, beside his parents at Bosque Bello Cemetery in a private family service.

Mr. Dennis was such a kind person. He put others first and was always willing to lend a helping hand. When I came into work he would always ask how is Lisa doing today and it made me smile. He loved to talk to people about their pets and tell stories about his dog chipper. Just an all around nice guy. I hope his family finds peace.

I met Mr. Dennis – first as a customer at Publix – then as a employee and co-worker. My prayers for his family – Chipper – his dog which he loved so much – and to all of his friends and customers – there are so many and he is and will be so deeply missed. We have another amazing Angel watching over us – guiding us and providing us with awesome information. Rest In Peace Mr. Dennis – your absents is so prevalent.

Tom and I have known Dennis for many years and Dennis always asked about each of our children often when he bagged my groceries at Publix. I looked forward to seeing him every time I went to the store. He always had great advice about and much knowledge about so many products at the store. Because I am a cancer survivor, he always made sure I was eating and buying the “right stuff” so that I was living a healthy life. I will miss Dennis and his smiling face every time I am at Publix

Dennis was such a pleasure to see when I visited Publix. Always smiling, asked about my sons who both worked there while in high school, always talking to me about my yorkies and his beloved Chipper. He would tell me about things Chipper would do and would just beam with love. I remember not too long ago, I mentioned to him that I left my umbrella in the cart on my last shopping trip and he went and brought me all the umbrellas they had. None belonged to me, but he did that for several weeks when I would come in to shop. Just such a kind soul. He will be missed. Bless his loved ones and his Chipper.

  • Lorraine Byrd King Posted November 10, 2018 11:25 am

I have know Dennis for many years since school days. We reacquainted at Publix. He was a kind and gentle person and always had something nice to say to people. We talked about the antics of our Jack Russell Terriers each time we met. He loved and enjoyed Chipper as a companion. He always spoke well of his brother and sister in law. He will be miss by many. I hope he knew how many friends he really had.

  • Deborah and Paul Manning Posted November 11, 2018 7:27 pm

Dennis was always so sweet and informative. He seemed to love his job at Publix and enjoyed talking
with the customers. He knew that his sister in law Gretchen and I were old friends at Delta and always
kept me updated about her and Edward. We will miss him greatly..

  • Sheila Arceneaux Posted November 12, 2018 12:16 am

He was always so kind and helpful whenever I came in with the late Mrs. Elizabeth Mullen he would come up to us and help us in anyway he could. He always walked us to the car and put the groceries in even though I could have done it. After Mrs. Mullen passed away, I went into Public and Mr. Dennis told me that he missed Mrs. Mullen and he knew that I did also. Well, I miss you also Mr. Dennis. The world would be a better place to live in if there were more people who cared like Dennis. He was an angle on earth, and I’m so glad that I got to meet him. Public should plant a tree or place his picture in the store. RIP Mr. Dennis!

  • Laura Sorensen Morris Posted November 13, 2018 11:25 am

I will miss Dennis so much. He always made my day every time I talked with him in Publix. The last time I saw Dennis was at the groomers. He took Chipper in & I took Gizmo in for Teresa to groom. He loved that Chipper. Dennis made this world a better place. I hope Publix puts his picture up in the store. He will be truly missed. My deepest condolences to the family.

  • Elizabeth Purvis Posted November 13, 2018 5:08 pm

Dennis was special! He cared about his customers, family and especially Chipper. He was a good employee who loved his customers and had great respect for his Publix family. I never heard him say an unkind word about anyone. He will be missed! You’re in my prayers Edward.

  • Kathy Crockett Posted November 16, 2018 9:42 am

Dennis…..THANK YOU! Thank you for being the kind, friendly, genuinely loving, wise and gentle soul that you were each & every day. You are missed by so many and loved by so many. At Publix the other day at checkout I was asked if I found everything I needed and I said “everything but Dennis” and the nice young man bagging my goods said “yes, the world would be a much nicer place if there were more people like Dennis in it”. We are all so very blessed to have known you and Chipper. You NEVER failed to ask about my “babies” Allie & Shadow and tell me of Chipper’s latest antics lol. There will never be another “Dennis”.
May you rest in peace near Rainbow Bridge so that when Chipper comes he doesn’t have to wait long to be in your loving arms again! God Bless & keep you in HIS loving care.
Edward, Gretchen, family and friends ~ may God grant you peace and strength as you transition and hold the memories close in heart always & forever. Much love to you all.
