Donald L. Shafer

August 31, 1929 - April 4, 2018     Age: 88

Mr. Donald Lee Shafer, age 88 of Fernandina Beach, FL passed away on Wednesday, April 4, 2018 at his residence.

He was born on August 31, 1929 in Watsontown, PA to the late Ralph and Lena (Rupert) Shafer.

Mr. Shafer attended Lycoming College in Williamsport, PA.  In 1951 he married Miriam E. Ulmer and enlisted in the US Air Force, where he served honorably in the Korean Conflict.

He was a Free Mason and a member of the lodge in Williamsport, PA.

Donald and Miriam discovered Amelia Island in the mid 90’s after retirement.  Three years of “wintering” led to full-time residence in 1998.

 He was a spiritual man, attending the Memorial United Methodist Church in Fernandina Beach, where he enjoyed the church socials and the fellowship they offered.  Mr. Shafer was a loving husband and father and enjoyed spending time with his family.  In quieter times, he could always be found reading a good book.

He is preceded in death by his daughter, Laura Shafer in 2009.

Mr. Shafer leaves behind his wife of 67 years, Miriam Shafer of Fernandina Beach, FL; children, Mark Shafer and his wife Amelia of Yulee, FL; Debbie McCafferty of Yulee, FL; Kenneth Shafer and his wife Brenda of Williamsport, PA; brother, Richard Shafer and his wife Donna of Birmingham, AL; grandchildren, Ryan McCafferty, Shannon McCafferty,  Amy Leigh Fehl  and her husband Cory.

The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Donald’s name to the American Heart Association or Memorial United Methodist Church.

Services will be at 10:00 am on Thursday, April 26, 2018 at the Memorial United Methodist Church in Fernandina Beach.

    Hey Dad, I’m so sorry you had such a challenging year taking care of mom. You did such a good job with her, and you were a really loving father. Now you can rest, and we can take care of mom. I’m really missing you right now. But I know you are with Laura and your parents and mom’s loved ones who passed. Send them my love. Please give Jiminy, Junior, and Pitter lots of cuddles too. Love you daddy.

    My thoughts and prayers are with you all. It’s been a long time since we we were neighbors as children. I have warm memories of your sweet parents and playing on Becht Road. Give your mother a hug for me..

    So sorry to read of Don’s passing. He and my mom were first cousins, stirring alot of emotions. My most heartfelt sympathy to Miriam and the family. And you are right, Deb, it is peaceful to know he is with his family that has gone before him and we will see them all once again
