Mr. Frederick “Fred” William Giltmier Jr., age 74 of Fernandina Beach, formerly of Atlanta passed away peacefully on Thursday morning, August 24, 2017 at the Warner Center for Caring in Fernandina Beach after a long and valiant battle with Alzheimers.
Born in Evergreen Park, IL, he was the only son and one of four children born to the late Frederick W. Giltmier and Annamae Wirth Giltmier. He was a graduate of Brother Rice High School in Evergreen Park after which he attended Chicago State University where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Education. After college he worked as an Elementary School Teacher. He later joined Arco Oil Company as a Manager of Customer Service. Mr. Giltmier transferred to the Atlanta operation where he was introduced to the world of banking. He entered the Banking Industry working with C and S Bank of Atlanta and remained there through the merger and acquisition with Nations Bank and Bank of America. Mr. Giltmier transferred as Senior Vice President with Bank of America to the Charlotte, NC office from where he retired in 2002.
He and his wife have made Fernandina Beach their home since 2004.
Mr. Giltmier was devoted to his Catholic heritage and enjoyed being a member of the church choir and contributing his time and efforts to church fund raisers. He and his family had been members of St. John Neumann Catholic Church, Lilburn, Ga. Holy Cross Catholic Church in Atlanta, Ga, and St Michael Catholic church in Fernandina Beach, FL.
He enjoyed Dancing, traveling, studying History and his volunteer work as a Docent at the Amelia Island Museum of History and as a member of the Fernandina Beach Police Auxiliary.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Giltmier is preceded in death by his first wife, Nancy Christine Giltmier who passed away in 1991.
He leaves behind, his wife of nineteen years, Michele Doolin Giltmier, Fernandina Beach, FL, children, Mark John Giltmier and his wife, Paige, McDonough, GA, Matthew Luke Giltmier and his wife, Jennifer, Pawley’s Island, SC, Joanna Banks Cook and her husband, Walter, Marietta, GA, Thomas Russell Wood Jr., his partner Allison Mylod, Bedford, NH, three sisters, Alice Kmiec, Chicago, IL, Betty Regner, Kissimmee, FL, Mary Kay Evans, Phoenix, AZ, six grandchildren, James Giltmier, Alanah Giltmier, Noah Giltmier, Nathaniel Giltmier, Griffin Banks and Everett Wood as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Mr. Giltmier will be laid to rest in Eternal Hills Memory Gardens, Snellville, GA.
A gathering of his family and friends in Fernandina Beach will take place at a later date.
