John H. Holler (Jack), a Midwestern gentleman, died on March 28th in Amelia Island, Florida. He was 87.
Jack was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa to Lu and Beth Holler. He grew up in Shaker Heights, Ohio, and attended Shaker Heights High School, where he was a three-sport athlete. Jack attended Washington and Lee University, where he played both basketball and baseball.
Following his graduation in 1952, Jack served with the U.S. Marine Corps in Korea. Upon his return, Jack married his high school sweetheart, Jean Cowan, in 1955. Together, they raised three daughters in Short Hills, New Jersey. Jean passed away in 1986, after 31 years of marriage.
Professionally, Jack was a mortgage banker in New York City. In 1982, he started the John H. Holler Company in Springfield, New Jersey.
In 1992, Jack married Cynthia Richter. In 1996 they moved to Pawlet, Vermont and later to Dorset, VT. Throughout their time in Vermont, they maintained a second home in Amelia Island, Florida where they were members of the Amelia Island Club. In 2015, they moved full-time to Amelia Island, leaving behind the Vermont farm where their grandchildren enjoyed many bucolic visits.
He was a devoted dog lover throughout his life and his beloved black lab, Joy, joined him on his final night.
Jack is survived by his wife, Cynthia, his three daughters, Jill Durovsik (Tom), Lisa Malloy (John), and Robin Durston (Marshall), and two stepchildren, Gretchen Massey (Paul) and Thomas Richter. Jack leaves behind 11 grandchildren; Taylor, Paige, and John Durovsik, Caroline and Brendan Malloy, Dusty, Lily, and Mac Durston, and P.J., Sarah, and Greta Massey.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, April 12th at 11:00am at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Fernandina Beach, Florida.
