Michael Barry

May 9, 1957 - December 22, 2018     Age: 61

Michael D. Barry, of Fernandina Beach passed away at his home Saturday, December 22, 2018 after a short but courageous battle with cancer.

Born in Tokyo, Japan to a military family, Michael was a son of the late Colonel Michael Anthony and Helen Maher Barry.

As a child in a military family, Michael lived in several places before moving to Daytona Beach, Florida when he was ten years old. He was a member of the 1975 graduating class of Fr. Lopez Catholic High School in Daytona Beach. He attended Daytona State College before transferring to the University of Florida. It was there at Florida he would meet his future wife, Lauren Lowe.

Michael graduated from the College of Journalism and Communications at UF in 1979 with a bachelor’s degree in Advertising. Michael’s unique way with people, his ability to interact with strangers and his friendliness made him a good friend to whomever he met.

Michael worked in several capacities in the hospitality trades on Amelia Island. Even though legally blind, no one ever really knew it. While working at the Amelia Island Club, Michael served as a bartender in the Sea Oats Dining Room even if Michael didn’t recognize who someone was he would always know them by they drank.

While there were many things in life he enjoyed, dancing was huge part of his life.

A longtime communicant at St. Peter’s Episcopal Parrish, he served in a number of roles there and was active in the Cursillo Movement.

In addition to his parents, Michael was preceded in death by a sister, Donna Maria Barry and a brother in law, Walter Sparkman Lowe.

He leaves behind his wife of 36 years, Lauren Lowe Barry, of Fernandina Beach; his children, Michael Brennan Barry of Atlanta, Georgia and Bridget Alana Barry of Fernandina Beach; a sister, Susan Ann Barry of Daytona Beach, Florida; a brother in law, Danny Lowe and his wife, Kathy, of Fernandina Beach; nieces and nephews, Lindsay Lowe Anderson and her husband, Jack, of Tampa, Florida, Lauren Lowe also of Tampa, and Louie Lowe, III of Valdosta, Georgia.

Services for Michael will be held Saturday, January 5, 2019, beginning at 1:00 PM, at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church. Michael will be laid to rest during a private family gathering at a later date.

Those desiring may remember Michael by donating to the Cursillo Movement, in care of St. Peter’s, 801 Atlantic Avenue, Fernandina Beach, Florida 32034 or to the Food Ministry of The Journey Church, 95707 Amelia Concourse, Fernandina Beach, Florida 32034 or the charity of one’s choice.

Wish I had some profound words of comfort but I don’t.
I feel truly blessed to have known him throughout the years, back from his college and disco days.
He had a heart of gold. We know he is now free of pain in heaven.
    May his memory be eternal.
Love, hugs and prayers to all of his precious family.

Lauren, I am sorry to read of Michael’s passing. I know that he is not in pain anymore, but even with that comfort his passing has left a void. I have only seen him a few times over the years, but he always had a smile and a greeting. My prayer is that God will provide you the peace and comfort that only he can provide. May you be surrounded by family and friends and may each of you be comforted by the very special memory of the special moments that you shared.

Lauren, I keep thinking about the last email I sent to you and Michael Saturday . We ARE sheltered and comforted under God’s Wings, just as the visual showed and Psalm 91:4 says. Lauren, my love goes out to you as you and all of us will miss Michael tremendously here on earth . Such fun days we had at AIP! He was always right in tune with my nonsense and fun with the employee skits and I remember the ‘blind leading the blind” at the ERA dinner last year. Everyone loved Michael. He was a light, a delight and a joy! Such fun heaven will be with him there!! Michael was one of the kindest people I have ever met. He truly loved… He was full of delight in the Lord Jesus.and it reflected all around him. My prayers and love to you, Lauren and family, as God comforts and holds you close during this temporary parting.

Lauren, I’m so sorry that I can’t be there for you & the kids. I loved working with you both. Michael was a live wire that never had anything bad to say about anyone. He was a good friend, joke teller, bartender, & dancer! I loved every Christmas party that you both attended. God got a good angel & he will dancing his way around heaven. Love & prayers from Texas.

Mike was a classmate of mine at Father Lopez High School and at the time he had the reputation as the big man on campus. Very funny, very outgoing person. I remember watching Mike dance at the soc hops we had at Father Lopez High. He was actually quite a good dancer. After high school I didn’t see him very often, but I actually got to talk to him a few months ago and he sounded really good. Very positive, very optimistic. My prayers and condolences to Lauren and the entire Barry family. Mike was a great guy and will be greatly missed by many.

To the family…..I’m so sorry to read about the loss of Michael. May you find comfort from the Bible’s promise that one day the overwhelming grief we experience when we lose a loved one will be a thing of the past as the last enemy death is brought to nothing. (1 Corinthians 15:26) Hearts will be healed as our precious loved ones are restored to life again.
(John 5:28,29; Acts 24:15) I extend my condolences to the family.
