Raedene Bauer Dales

Raedene Bauer Dales

April 1, 1939 - December 5, 2018     Age: 79

RaeDene Ruth Bauer Dales 79, of Fernandina Beach, FL, and Alexandria Bay, NY, succumbed to cancer on December 5, 2018, at her home in Amelia Park.  She was born in Lorain, Ohio, to Lydema and Raymond Bauer on April 1, 1939, and graduated from Lorain High School. She was devoted to her stepfather, Dr. Sherman Carl Ward, who encouraged her to become a nurse.

She met the love of her life, Douglas S. Dales, Jr., in Ann Arbor, while a nursing student at the University of Michigan (Go Blue!).  She and Doug raised three sons, who were her pride and joy.  She loved them fiercely.  RaeDene had six grandchildren. She delighted in creating experiences and memories for them, taking them on adventures to Hoffman’s Playland, Walt Disney World, Racquette Lake, and the St. Lawrence River where she was the founding member of the “Whip Cream Club” — an exclusive and highly caloric association of her grandchildren.  RaeDene was generous and wanted her children and grandchildren to know how much they meant to her.

RaeDene was a talented nurse, serving as charge nurse in the pediatric and psychiatric wards, and eventually a nursing instructor at the University of Michigan Hospital.  She loved teaching and inspiring the next generation of medical professionals.  For nearly 30 years, while raising her family, she enjoyed a successful real estate career in the Capital Region.  RaeDene had a terrific eye, and her sense of design was an asset to her clients and her family.  She found great joy in helping buyers find the perfect home to suit their families.

RaeDene tended her beautiful gardens on Lexington Parkway, Dingman Point Lane, and finally on Park Avenue, which filled and brightened her days.  She was an excellent cook, and passed that skill on to her sons.

RaeDene is survived by her beloved husband of 60 years, Doug Dales, and her three sons: Doug of Schenectady, NY; Ward (Jorge Baldizon) Dales of North Greenbush, NY; Scott (Joanna) Dales of Kalamazoo, MI. She leaves behind six grandchildren: Aaron (New York, NY), Sean (Clifton Park, NY) and Jordan Dales (Ballston Spa, NY); Charlie, Jack and Will Dales of Kalamazoo, MI.   She is also survived by her dear friend and caregiver, Rick Kintner, who comforted her lovingly until the very end.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Raymond Bauer, Jr., and her infant daughter, Stephanie Dales.  In lieu of flowers, friends may consider making a memorial contribution to the Save the River organization of the 1,000 Islands.

I am very sorry for your loss. I hope you find comfort in your memories of RaeDene and from others who remember her fondly. Psalms 147:3 says; “He is healing the broken hearted ones and is binding up their painful spots”. May these words comfort your heart as you go through this difficult time of grief.

I am sorry to hear of Aunt Raedene’s passing. She helped me via long telephone calls through more than a few rough patches in my life. She encouraged my writing and taught me never to settle. She will be missed. Her smile and laughter and avocado scrambled eggs most of all 🙂

So sorry that you will be missing this wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother …her life sounds wonderful but not long enough! May the peace from God comfort you

  • Ellen and Joe Chamberlain Posted December 8, 2018 12:17 pm

RaeDene was a small woman with a big heart. She was fiercely protective of her husband, sons, and grandchildren, who were the most important people in her life. Although she was a successful businesswoman, proud of her accomplishments in the marketplace, it was her role as wife, mother, and grandmother that meant the most to her. At times she fought against real and perceived hurts that sometimes overwhelmed her, but in all she was a most generous and kind woman who valued the friendships she had nurtured throughout her life. Joe and I were fortunate to maintain a close relationship with RaeDene and Doug for many years and we cherish the memories of the good times we shared with them in New York, at the River, in South Carolina, and Florida. Rest in peace, RaeDene. We will miss you.

In 1975, I was on a 5th grade trip to Boston that Mrs. Dales was chaperoning. My camera ran out of batteries and she gave me money to buy new ones. I will always remember her kindness.

RaeDene in the early years of the 70’s we came to know you through tennis and the holler “go Blue”. Virginia was the tennis player and Doug and I were the followers. Your wit and glib humor was the part of your personality always. We enjoyed being at the River to enjoy what you loved about that “special place”.
you had more energy and could work without end and smile about the progress. never a mean word except when it came the politics. We will miss you and will slowly have to accept that you are gone but never forgotten . a person who gave so much to her family and friends. How could you pass so fast from our memories with that beautiful hat. good by dear friend

RaeDene’s humor, her “edge” and her warmth — these stand out as I think about my high school years and time spent at the Lexington Pkwy house. Thank you, Ward and Scott, for inviting me into the fold which gave me the opportunity to know your mom.
