Mr. Robert William “Bobby” Gill, age 68, of Fernandina Beach passed away on Friday evening, October 14, 2016 at Baptist Medical Center in Jacksonville, FL.
Born in Blackshear, GA he was the second of six children born to the late Nolan Archie and Ruth Brown Gill. As an infant his family moved to Fernandina with his father’s career at Container Corporation of America. Bobby grew up in Fernandina where he attended school before being drafted into the United States Marine Corps where he served as a Radio Operator. At the close of the Vietnam conflict and receiving an honorable discharge he returned to Fernandina Beach where he later met and married Janet Dale Caulkins, of Callahan. Upon returning home after serving in the USMC he accepted employment with the Nassau County Sheriff’s Department as a Jailer and Dispatcher. He later joined ITT Rayonier as a Welder where he remained until retiring in the early 2000s. He, his wife and their children made their home in Fernandina Beach until moving off the island in 1994.
Bobby grew up as a Baptist and upon meeting and marrying Janet began following the Methodist faith.
He was a member of Brickyard Hunting Club which was founded by his father. Bobby enjoyed hunting, fishing and any out of doors activity. Known as the family handiman; he could fix anything presented to him in nonworking condition.
Mr. Gill leaves behind his wife of 36 years, Janet Gill, Fernandina Beach, FL, children, Alina Gill, Fernandina Beach, FL, Weston Gill and his wife, Emily, Fernandina Beach, FL, Robert W. “Robbie” Gill, a sister, Brenda Rowe, Yulee, FL, three brothers, Nolan A. Gill Jr., Hilliard, FL, Cecil Gill, Fernandina Beach, FL, Michael Gill, Fernandina Beach, FL, two grandchildren, Amanda Smith, William Alvin Rimes IV and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held in Maxwell Hall at the Memorial United Methodist Church of Fernandina Beach at 11:00 AM on Thursday, October 20, 2016 with Rev. Drew Weseman officiating.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
Mr. Gill will be laid to rest in Jacksonville National Cemetery.
