Roger O. Godwin

April 26, 1959 - December 25, 2017     Age: 58

Roger O. Godwin, 58, passed away at his residence Monday, December 25, 2017. A native and life-long resident of Fernandina Beach, Roger was a son of the late Harold Lee and Willie Hulett Godwin, Sr. He was a 1977 graduate of Fernandina Beach High School and after high school, he attended Georgia Southern College in Statesboro, GA where he played baseball.

While at Georgia Southern he also was a member of the USA All Star baseball team and played in Cuba as part of the Intercontinental Cup Games. After leaving Georgia Southern he later graduated from Florida State University.

After completing his degree, Roger played professional baseball for three years as part of the Houston Astros organization and also played professional ball as part of the European League in Holland.

He would return to the States and begin a career as a teacher. He taught PE at Hilliard Middle-Senior High School and coached baseball for four years. He then went on to teach PE at Yulee Middle School. He also coached girl’s softball and soccer while there.

Roger then returned to the family commercial fishing business. He loved being on the water whether it was commercial shrimping or sport fishing. He was always at home on the water.

He also loved playing the guitar and singing. Although he never sang or played professionally, he never turned down the opportunity to play or sing before a group. It was said of him, “he was a pretty good hobby class singer and guitar player”.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a nephew, Phillip Godwin.

His surviving family includes: his brothers and sister, Mary Bennett and her husband, Al, of Fernandina Beach; Albert Godwin and his wife, Kay, of Crawfordville, FL; Bob Godwin and his wife, Kathy, of Hilliard; Lee Godwin and his wife, Annette, of Fernandina Beach; three nephews, Deron Bennett of Fernandina Beach and Brad Bennett and his wife, Kristi, of Fernandina Beach and David Godwin and his wife, Hilarie, of Yulee; a great niece, Hayley Godwin of St. Augustine as well as 3 great-great nieces.

A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, December 30, 2017 at 3:00 PM in the Burgess Chapel of Oxley-Heard Funeral Directors.

He will be laid to rest in a private family service at a later date.

Hearing of Roger’s passing made my heart so sad but the memories brought a smile. Growing up on 16th Street with Roger made for wonderful childhood memories. Roger and I started out in first grade together with hisr brithers’ Heavy metal albums and ended our school days our junior year at Georgia Southern. Needless to say these were fun times. Roger a college athlete with all the perks and me a broke college student. Roger would bring me home from Statesboro when I just had to come but I had to pay for the gas. You will be missed by all who knew and loved you my friend. My prayers for your family.

It’s hard to believe he’s gone. I haven’t had the good fortune to see Roger in quite some time but he left me with an indelible memory of his big heart, his big smile and his big hug. Roger was just one of a kind. Rest In Peace, Roger. You left us too soon. Much love and deepest condolences to the entire Godwin family.

My condolences to the family, no one can prepare us for the grief we experience when we lose a loved one, at 1 Peter 5:7 we are encouraged to “throw all your anxiety on him, because he cares for you.” Even though missed your loved one is not forgotten and God who is the life giver is eager to restore life to those who have fallen asleep in death and promises to do so by means of a ressurection. ( John 5:28,29)

    To all the Godwin Family,

My most heartfelt sympathies are with you all. Roger was my very good friend. The priceless memories of growing up together…school, baseball, football, hunting, fishing, and just about everything else will never be forgotten. Roger left us far too early but I’m so thankful for our friendship and the final time we shared together at our 40th class reunion in September. Rest in peace my friend.

Roger was one of the first friends I met when I lived on 16th street and my dad was in Vietnam. He was like a brother to me, always there when I had no friends, in a new town. When we all grew up, he was still one of the kindest, most decent people I have ever known. I dearly miss him playing that 5 string guitar at Bad Street! Rest In Peace, my friend. I pray that we meet again. ❤️

I am sorry I couldn’t attend Roger’s celebration of life service! I wanted you to know that your sweet family are in my prayers!
Roger has entered into God’s peace and God’s rest! He was a wonderful man he will be missed!

For we walk by faith, not by sight. We are confident, yes, well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord. 2 Corinthians 5:7-8
