It was my good fortune to meet Gail when I became her next-door neighbor in 2004. She was one of the best friends I ever had, and I will always love and miss her. Our loss is Heaven's gain. May she rest in the arms of Jesus for eternity.

Gail W. Shave, 82, of Fernandina Beach, Florida went to be with her Lord on June 28, 2024, at her home surrounded by her loving family.
Gail was born in Twin City, Georgia on May 18, 1942, to the late Annie Laurie Whitfield and Henry Judson Whitfield. She was raised in Beaufort, South Carolina where Mr. Whitfield served in the United States Marines. Gail graduated from Beaufort High School in 1959. After graduating from the Medical College of Charleston in 1962 with a degree in nursing, she married Walter E. Smith (Smitty) and moved to Houston, Texas. After Mr. Smith’s untimely death she moved to Charleston, South Carolina where she gave birth to her daughter Kimberly.
On June 7, 1969, Gail married Benjamin Shave in Charleston, South Carolina where they lived before moving to Jacksonville, Florida in 1973. In 1978, Ben and Gail moved to Fernandina Beach. After relocating briefly to Tampa, Florida, they returned to their hometown of Fernandina Beach where they remained. She and Ben celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary on June 7th this year.
Gail spent most of her professional life working with St. Vincent’s Hospital where she was head of the IV team until her retirement in 1993. The IV team was affectionally known as the “IV Angels”. After retiring from St. Vincent’s she worked with Baxter Corporation until 2002, where she continued her work in helping others.
Gail was an incredible wife, mentor and guiding light to her children Kim Golden (Jeff) and Rick Shave(Patti). She was a precious grandmother to her grandchildren Tyler Mixon (Lauren), Madison Waters (Ryan), Zac Slater, Morgan Slater, Ben Shave and Logan Shave. She was blessed with three great grandchildren Addy, Denver and Drayden. She was further blessed earlier in life to have her brother, Craig (Belinda) Whitfield and sister, Judy (Eddie) Kramer.
Gail was a member of the Memorial United Methodist Church where she served faithfully. During her time in Fernandina Beach, Gail was a member of the Women’s Club, the Magnolia Garden Club, the Gail Shave Circle at Memorial United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. Gail lived her life faithfully always putting others before herself and volunteering her time at every opportunity. She dedicated her career and life to caring for others.
A visitation will be held at Oxley-Heard Funeral Home from 5PM to 7PM on Monday, July 8, 2024. A memorial service will be held at the Memorial United Methodist Church at 11AM on Tuesday, July 9, 2024. Gail will be laid to rest at Bosque Bello Cemetery at a later date.
