Pops was the sweetest man I've ever known. I'll miss his quick wit, funny jokes and when he sings to me on my birthday. 😊 Most of all, I'll miss the way my husband lights up when he is near him. To know him, is to love him. ❤️

Vicki Young Caraway

I am Jim's 1st cousin. My father was his Uncle Phil. I remember so many wonderful summers when Jim, Bill and their parents would come to North Carolina, to catch up with others from the Young clan! Although we lived far apart, we got to know one another well. Jim was always smiling! I am one of the younger cousins. He was always very good to me. In our adulthood, we haven't seen each other as much, but we all kept that fondness we gained as children. Godspeed, Jim. Rest-in-peace.

James "Jim" M. Young

2022-08-05

James "Jim" Young, a retired telecommunications technician and veteran of the United States Air Force, died unexpectedly on August 5, 20 2022 at the age of 74. He passed with his loving wife by his side.

Jim was born in Baltimore, Maryland on June 29, 1948, to Jesse Ray and Ella Young. He graduated from Fernandina Beach High School in 1966 and enlisted into the U.S. Air Force.

After serving four years in the Air Force, he returned home and began a 33-year career with Bellsouth Telecommunications. He was especially proud of the times he was assigned to be the technician “on-site” for visits to Amelia Island Plantation by President Bill Clinton and actress, Linda Carter, of Wonder Woman fame.

On March 28, 1986, he married the love of his life, Patricia "Ms. Pete" and they raised 8 children (and all the neighborhood kids) together.

Jim was a loving father and devoted husband. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and taking trips to the North Carolina mountains. He liked puzzles, arts, and listening to music. He was a spiritual man. His children saw him as their hero, and his wife always referred to him as her "Gentle Giant."

Jim is predeceased by his mother, Ella Young and his father, Jesse Ray Young; his brother, William "Bill" Young; and his son Dewayne Walters.

Jim leaves behind his wife of 36 years, Patricia "Pete" Young; his children, Kelly Young Daniel (David), Robin Young Aplin (Jerry), Rachel Walters Dufresne, Jason Walters (Robyn), William Chandler, Samantha Towers Carter (Corey), and Joshua Towers (Ashley); his grandchildren, Courtney Bobbitt White, Casey Hodges, Christian Walters, Austin McCulloch, Carson Walters, Matthew Walters; and his great grandchildren Ian Hodges, John McCulloch, Amelia McCulloch, and Corey Grey Carter.

Funeral services for Jim will be held Wednesday, August 10, 2022 at 12:00 PM in the Burgess Chapel of Oxley-Heard Funeral Directors with Chaplain Jackie Hayes officiating. The family will received friends beginning at 11:00 AM.

Jim will be laid to rest, with miliary honors, at Jacksonville National Cemetery at a later date.
