Mary Elizabeth Betty Hamilton

2020-12-14

Mary Elizabeth “Betty” Hamilton, age 86, passed away peacefully on December 13, 2020 at the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville, TN.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Hubert Jones “Ham” Hamilton, and son, Stephen Allison “Steve” Ensley.
Betty is survived by two daughters and their spouses, Dinah and Marcus Collins, Shelly and Stewart Terry; daughter-in-law, Ellen Ensley; four grandchildren (Jason, Abhram, Camden and Peyton); and three great-grandchildren (Sayla, CJ and Graham).
Betty was born in Odum, GA on January 11, 1934 and is of the Christian faith. She lived in several places throughout her life including Fernandina Beach, FL, Sylva, NC, Tavares, FL and Knoxville, TN. Above all, she was a loving and devoted mother who worked hard to provide a great home for her family. Christmas was her favorite time of year. She lived it year-round for 20 years while she owned and operated Nancy Tut’s Christmas Shop, which is still open and celebrating 51 years of business. After retirement, Betty visited her family and friends, enjoyed lawn bowling and golf, traveled throughout the US and world, and played many rounds of Skit Scat, Hand & Foot, Dominoes, Skip Bo, and Uno. In fact, we played several games in the hospital on Saturday. In short, she was an extraordinary woman, led an amazing life and touched so many people throughout her life. She will be dearly missed!
With health guidelines in place, Graveside Services will be held at Bosque Bello Cemetery in Fernandina Beach, Florida on Saturday, December 19, 2020 at 2pm.

Shelly, Dinah and all the family. I knew and loved Betty for many years. We were cousins coming from the same Mallard family in Wayne County. She had a great love for her family and almost anyone she came in contact. She was a people person for sure. May the Lord give you peace in the coming days! Love to all, Ivalene Mallard Miles

Dinah and Shelly,
I am so sorry to hear of your mothers passing. She was a wonderful lady and I had some great times decorating Christmas trees with her! She also taught me how to put potato chips in my sandwich to give it that extra crunch! I hope the wonderful memories you have of her bring you some comfort at this time and may peace be in your heart during this season of hope.

Dinah & Shelly:

I am so saddened to learn of your mothers passing. I remember Ms. Hamilton fondly always welcoming and always smiling. I lost my mom in May and nothing compares to how losing your mother hits you. I pray that God wraps his loving arms around you and holds you tightly in His love. I know there will be tears, but I hope when you remember, your smiles will always outweigh your tears. My thoughts and prayers are with you today and in the days that will follow, especially during the holiday season. Love You both!

Shelly and Dinah Im so sorry to hear about your mom. She was such a sweetheart. Always cheerful. Always nice to me, even when I was an obnoxious kid flirting with her daughters. She will be missed. I cant go through Dillsboro without thinking of her and the Christmas shop. And Ive told the story of Ham mowing the lawn and being asked how much he charged roughly 100 times. Im thinking of you guys today. So deeply saddened. If youre ever back in Sylva, please get in touch. I moved my family back here a couple of years ago.
Carl & Barbara December 17, 2020

Barbara and I sure enjoyed our time with Betty. We loved her and are praying for comfort to the families.

Dinah and Shelly and family
In this world there are do-ers and be-ers. Betty was a do-er. Shes the first one Id pick to be on my team, whether on the playground, the card table, any lawn game, but especially in business. She maintained a positive can-do attitude, even in difficult circumstances, and never failed to help us all solve our own problems haha. I do and will cherish every memory of our times together in the past 30+ years. She has remained a loyal and faithful friend from the beginning. She loved her family so and I will always smile when I think of her. And I will see her each time I see you all smile. Much love.

Its funny that you mentioned Skit Skat. I was thinking the other day that some of my favorite memories are of your mom and mine sitting around the big dining table with friends and family paying that crazy game. It seemed to me the later it got the louder they got. I loved sitting on the stairs listening to their laughter. Betty was so very special and loved by so many including momma. Im truly sorry for the sadness your family is feeling at this difficult time but I know your mom is at peace now and surrounded by so many who love her and have been patiently waiting to see her again. Sending love and condolences
