Sally Sue Henderson

2020-10-27

Sally Henderson, long-time resident of Amelia Island, Florida, and previously of Chatham Township, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on October 25, 2020 at the age of 88.

Sally was born on January 23, 1932 in Hamilton, Ohio, to David and Ruby Lintner Sohngen. Sally was raised in Hamilton and graduated from Hamilton High School in 1950. She attended DePauw University and graduated from Miami University of Ohio ('54), where she was involved in a number of campus organizations, especially Pi Beta Phi. During her senior year of college Sally married her high school classmate, Thomas Shields Henderson.

Following graduation Sally and Tom spent two years in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where Sally was an elementary school teacher and Tom attended business school. When Tom began his investment career in New York they settled in New Jersey, where they raised their two daughters, Marcy and Amy.

Sally and Tom retired to Amelia Island, FL, where they were very active in the local community. Sally had many interests and hobbies, particularly gardening, the arts, entertaining friends and family, and traveling the world with Tom. She was extremely devoted to helping others and enjoyed volunteering and supporting several local organizations.

Sally will be remembered for her faith, thoughtfulness, kind and caring nature, and above all, her love for her family.

Sally was preceded in death by Tom, her beloved husband of 66 years. She is survived by her two daughters, Marcy Murphy and Amy Henderson; five granddaughters, Sara, Erin and Melissa Murphy, Lauren and Jaime Inglesino; two sisters-in-law, Jane McAdams and Sheila Baden; son-in-law, Jay Murphy; brother-in-law, Jim Baden, and several nieces and nephews.

The family expresses their deepest gratitude to Sally's devoted and caring Angel Watch caregivers who became part of the family.

Due to current circumstances a service will be planned for a future date.

SUSIE SADLER November 5, 2020
Im so sorry to hear of Sallys passing. I enjoyed time with both Sally and Tom when visiting on Miami Universitys behalf. Sally was also related to my aunt Nancy Cottrell of Hamilton Oh who also just passed. I thank both of your parents for their generosity over the years. They supported so many meaningful causes in their area as well as Miami. Wishing you peace during this tough time. Susie Sadler

Dear Marcy and Amy, Bob and I are sad that our days of taking Sally to Music Festival concerts are over. But once this Covid threat is past, we will once again attend plays in Henderson theatre at ACT, go to classes in the lovely Henderson Hall at the Council on Aging, and join with countless people whose lives have been made better because of your parents generosity. They loved you and their grand-girls so dearly! Much love to you all, Robin and Bob Bolan
