Verla G. Shelton

2024-04-11

Verla Shelton, 89 of Fernandina Beach, Florida passed away on April 11th 2024 at the Bill and Jane Warner Center for Fernandina Beach.

Born on January 29th 1935 in Collier County near the Florida Everglades to Leo Eldridge Garrett and Dorothy Newcomb Moser. Verla grew up in many places but graduated from Arizona State University with a degree in English. Verla found her forever home in Fernandina in the early 60’s where she met and married Charles Shelton.

After graduating college Verla began teaching English as well as Art in several places in Florida, but settled in Yulee and Fernandina. In 1974 Verla welcomed her only son Jacques into this world and was a dedicated Mom. Jacques references Verla as a selfless mother, always giving and wanting to do more for others than herself.

Verla enjoyed reading and the arts, but her passion was working outside and caring for her flowers and garden. No flower ever went without a home, she loved every detail.

She was an active member of the St. Peters Episcopal Church downtown Fernandina and enjoyed attending and contributing there.

Verla leaves behind her son Jacques Shelton, two sisters Vivian Smith and Nettie Kenline. Sisters Rosemary Sweat and Vina Edwards preceded Verla’s passing.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, April 17, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. in the Burgess Chapel of Oxley-Heard Funeral Directors. Visitation begins at 10:00 a.m. until the hour of service.
