I knew Mr. Schrauth only in passing -- intersecting at least once a day during dog walks. But he was always a genial, chatty gentleman and I'm sorry we will no longer see him.
William Lawrence Schrauth, Jr.
William (Bill) L. Schrauth passed away peacefully at home with his wife of 62 years, Nancy Schrauth, and his family at his side. Bill and his family lived in Clinton and New Hartford, NY for nearly 50 years before he and Nancy moved to Amelia Island in Florida in 2008. Bill leaves his wife Nancy and his four children, Chris Schrauth (Debbie), Anne Schrauth, Mike Schrauth (Debbie) and Kate Schrauth Murphy (Brian) and grandchildren Bess, Michael, Kelsey, Colton, Emory, Griffin, and Brian.
Bill grew up in Rockville Centre, NY. In 1956 he graduated from St. Bonaventure University and in 1960 he graduated from Fordham University School of Law. Bill practiced law and became a partner of the Utica firm of Evans, Severn, Bankert & Peet in 1968. In 1973 Bill made a career change. He was elected a Vice President of the Savings Bank of Utica. A year later he was promoted to Executive Vice President and in 1975 was appointed a member of the bank’s Board of Trustees. In 1977 Bill was elected President of the bank at the age of 42, where he remained for 23 years until he retired in 2000. Bill’s family was proud of his many accomplishments and celebrated when he was named the Utica Observer Dispatch’s Businessman of the Year in 1988.
Bill served the community in a variety of ways including serving as a Board Member, Chair and President of The Community Foundation of Herkimer and Oneida Counties for nearly 30 years, Chair of the Health and Hospital Council of the Mohawk Valley, President of the Mohawk Valley Business & Industry Health Care Coalition, Chair of the Savings Bank Association New York State and a Board Member of Utica Area Chamber of Commerce, Oneida County Industrial Development Corporation, Utica Industrial Development Corporation, Utica Foundation, the local United Way, Children’s Hospital, Utica College Foundation, Utica neighborhood Housing Service, The Credit Bureau of Utica and Senior Day Center of Utica.
Family. faith and supporting his local community were always Bill’s priorities. Bill participated fully throughout his life as a coach, mentor and leader in all he did and to all he knew. Bill understood that service to others was one of life’s most needed and rewarding of endeavors.
Sharing his life with his beloved wife Nancy was his most joyful adventure. Raising their family, traveling, and walking the woods of Kirkland Town Park with his beloved children and dogs were the highlights of Bill’s long and beautiful life.
A funeral mass will be held at St. Michael Church in Fernandina Beach, FL on Tuesday, October 5, 2021 at 11am.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the William L. Schrauth Fund at the Community Foundation of Herkimer and Oneida Counties to support local nonprofit organizations throughout the Mohawk Valley. https://foundationhoc.org/give/funds/?search=Schrauth
