Wayne Mortenson

Mr. Wayne T. Mortenson, age 77, of Fernandina Beach, passed away on Tuesday morning, February 16, 2016 at the Warner Center for Caring.

Born in Berlin, NH, he was one of six children born to the late Theodore Edward and Avis Iola Bissett Mortensen. Mr. Mortenson grew up in Berlin and was a graduate of Berlin High School. After high school he worked as an Automotive Mechanic before joining the U.S. Army. Upon being honorably discharged he accepted employment at Ford Motor Company as a Master Mechanic. He later joined Portsmouth Ship Yard until accepting a transfer to Kings Bay Submarine Base in St. Mary’s, GA. After accepting appointment to Kings Bay he earned a Degree in Engineering from Florida State Community College. During his 30 year career at Kings Bay, Mr. Mortenson worked as a Submarine Troubleshooter in Guidance Systems Maintenance. He was often times called upon to travel to undisclosed locales for undisclosed reasons to repair problems on our nation’s ultra classified defense systems. Mr. Mortenson retired from Civil Service in 2006.

After retirement, Mr. Mortenson pursued the improvement of his golf game as a member of the Fernandina Beach Men’s Golf Association at the city course. He will be remembered as a “Tinkerer” that could find a way to fix anything

He is preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Evelyn LeRoux Mortenson, who passed away in July of 2015, a sister, Gloria Cellupica and two brothers, Raburn and Ronald Mortenson.

Mr. Mortenson leaves behind, a son, Erik Mortenson, Fernandina Beach, FL, a daughter, Amy Mortenson O’Shaughnessy, Kingsland, GA, two brothers, Kenneth Mortensen, Jefferson, NH, Gary Mortensen, Berlin, NH, three grandchildren, Elizabeth, Daniel and Dillon Schrom and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Mortenson will be laid to rest with his wife in the family section of Mount Hayes Cemetery, Gorham, NH.
