Alberta Leeper

2021-12-26

Alberta Inez (Jordan) Leeper, age 93 of Fernandina Beach, passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday, December 26, 2021, with her family by her side.

She was born on November 8, 1928 in Live Oak, Florida where she grew up and graduated from Suwannee County High School. She eventually moved to Jacksonville, Florida and worked as a waitress at Morrison’s Cafeteria.

In the summer of 1950 she met Joe Leeper, who was a young sailor in the United States Navy, on a blind date. After dating for six months they got married on February 7th 1951 in Kingsland, Georgia by a Justice of the Peace. Over the next seven years Alberta and Joe had four children. Brenda, Bill, Durwin, and Danny.

While Joe was a police officer for the Fernandina Beach Police Department, Alberta got a job as a waitress at the Marina Restaurant in downtown Fernandina, then the Blue Seas Restaurant at main beach and then eventually the Sandbar Restaurant in Amelia City.

In 1963 Alberta went to Beautician School in Jacksonville during the day while she worked at the Sandbar Restaurant at night. After graduation she got a job as a hair stylist at Verna Your Hair Stylist on North 6th Street beside the Presbyterian Church. She eventually purchased the shop in 1965, renamed it Alberta Your Hair Stylist and became a small business owner for over 30 years. She also styled hair at Oxley-Heard Funeral Home for many years.

Alberta was very proud of her kids and was always involved in their activities serving either as a “Team Mom” for many youth sports teams or cheering on their efforts at whatever they were involved in at the time. Through her actions she taught her children to work hard, be kind to others, to serve their community and to have faith in the Lord.

She was a devoted member of First Baptist Church in Fernandina Beach and made sure her children were there every Sunday while growing up. The entire family was eventually baptized there.

Alberta was a kind and gentle soul who was a friend to many and will be missed by all.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, four sisters, her infant son Durwin, daughter-in-law Kate Leeper, and son-in-law Johnny O’Quinn.

She is survived by Joe Leeper (her husband of 70 years), daughter Brenda O’Quinn, son Bill Leeper (Emma), son Danny Leeper (Kelly), as well as eight grandchildren: Brian O’Quinn (Renee), Joey O’Quinn (Chrissy), Karen Weeks (Michael), Jordan Leeper, Chelsea Moore (Chanse), Danielle Maxwell (Justin), Walker Mullin, John Michael Mullin and seven great grandchildren: Alec O’Quinn, Tayler O’Quinn, Brayden O’Quinn, Waylon Weeks, Ruthie Weeks, Harper Moore, Memphis Moore.

Funeral services will be held at First Baptist Church of Fernandina Beach on Wednesday, January 5, 2022 at 11:00 AM. The family will receive friends at the church beginning at 10:00 AM. She will be laid to rest in a private family graveside service at Jacksonville National Cemetery at 1 PM.

Pallbearers are Brian O’Quinn, Joey O’Quinn, Jordan Leeper, Justin Maxwell, Michael Weeks, and Chanse Moore.

In lieu of sending flowers, please consider making a donation in Alberta Leeper’s name to a charity of your choice.
