Barry E. Campbell
2020-04-20
Barry Eugene Campbell, age 77 of Fernandina Beach, FL passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 19, 2020 at the McGraw Center of Caring in Jacksonville.
Barry was born in Bedford County, VA to the late Reverend Eugene C. Campbell and Gwendolyn Johnson Campbell. After graduating from Montvale High School in 1960, Barry married his high school sweetheart, Linda Giles Campbell, and they were blessed to celebrate 59 glorious years together. He attended Lynchburg College, where he graduated with a history degree in 1963. From there, Barry began his career at New London Academy in Bedford where he was able to find his lifelong passion in education. He was a well-loved teacher, principal and administrator and during this time, he and Linda became parents to their son, Jason. Barry was actively involved with his community and family. He was a member of the Lions Club, a Cub Scout master, and the coach for his sons Little League baseball team.
Not one to rest on his laurels, Barry went on to get his Masters degree and Doctorate in Education from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. It was very special to Barry that he was able to attend the University at the same time as his son, Jason.
Barry was in Lynchburg City school administration until 2000, retiring as the Deputy Superintendent. At that time, he and Linda moved to Chester, SC, where he became the Superintendent of Chester County schools. He remained in Chester until retiring for good in 2006. He and Linda then moved south to Fernandina Beach, FL to be closer to their precious granddaughter, Carsyn, on whom they have always doted.
Barry kept very active by serving on the board for Communities in Schools in Fernandina Beach as well as the President of his homeowners association in North Hampton. He enjoyed golf with many friends and loved to tailgate and attend UVA football games. On many evenings, you would find Barry on the back porch with a cigar and cocktail in hand and a story to be told.
Anyone who met Barry was instantly engaged and enveloped in his warmth and focused attention. He was so loved by his family as well as friends and acquaintances. His easy nature and positive outlook were a blessing to all.
He leaves behind his beloved wife, Linda Giles Campbell; son Jason E. Campbell (Thea) of Jacksonville Beach, FL; granddaughter Carsyn Marie Campbell of Jacksonville Beach, FL; brother Ted Campbell (Caperton) of Madison Heights, VA; uncle Danny Johnson of Bedford, VA; and several nieces, nephews and extended family.
Services will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions for Barry may be made to the Alzheimers Association and the Nassau County Council on Aging Adult Day Healthcare Program.

I will remember Barry forever! He was an amazing, caring administrator while working with the Lynchburg, VA city school system. Barry was someone who was a great listener and was a person who was always ready to step in with ideas and help if needed. His sense of humor was great and many LCS employees will remember the skits he and others performed at the end of the school year teacher banquets. Im sure he will be remembered very fondly by SO many people whose lives he touched. I feel very fortunate to have known him while I worked as an LCS elementary school counselor. BROOKE BELL PETTYJOHN April 23, 2020
Jason and Family,
I was so sad to read about the death of your father in the Lynchburg paper. I have many wonderful memories of him from his Forest Elementary School Principal days. (I seem to also recall a very large, heavy wooden paddle that hung on a wall behind his desk) I think about your father time and again as i encounter school leaders with my own children, They do not make them like your father anymore. He was kind, generous, patient and someone who, almost forty years later, still brings a smile to my face. My years at Forest Elementary were wonderful because of you, Joe, Stacy, Randy, and Mike. But they may not have been as fantastic without your dad. My husband, Clu sends his condolences as well.

The best friend to the parents and the children. He never hesitated to give a hand when one was needed. He had always been remembered by my five children because of all his kindness. May the Lord hold you all in His loving hands. With prayers and love from your friend in Christ, Ofelia Angus
GARY GILES, DALLAS, TX April 26, 2020
I remember Mr Campbell so well. He was a wonderful Principal, knew everyone by name and knew how to get through to adolescent boys (ummlike me and a few I may know). He was active in the community, in particular the Lions Club which supported our Scout troop and I recall watching him umpire many little league games. Barry Campbell was the kind of man you want involved in your childs life. I pray Linda and Jason take some comfort in the fact Mr Campbell made a wonderful and lasting impact in this world.

Dear sweet Linda, Barry was my favorite boss ever. I loved that we got to see you all when you moved to Florida and will always remember our tailgate party at FSU. For someone as lively as Barry to be taken away from us at such a young age is really tragic, but I am so relieved that you moved to be closer to Jason, Thea and Carsyn all those years ago and I hope to be able to attend the services when you have them. Sending all of you some love.
