Prayers to Kathleen’s family. I remember going to her salon with my mom when we first moved back to Fernandina and listening to the ladies share the latest news. She was a beautiful lady and so kind. Rest in peace Kathleen.

Deanna Holloway, sister-in-law (Chris)

I always regarded Kathleen as the sweetheart of Fernandina Beach. There was none like her, nor will ever be. What an elegant, gracious lady!

With heavy hearts we announce the passing of our cherished mother Ms. Kathleen Holloway, age 92, passed away at her home on August 16, 2025, in Fernandina Beach, FL.

She was born one of 10 children on January 1st, 1933, in Waycross Ga. to Clarence and Oner Crews Strickland. In her youth, she learned to be resourceful, courageous, and hardworking. She held hard work as her highest moral code.

Our Mother was a determined, strong woman. A wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, she was focused, driven, generous and loyal. She led by example, living a life committed to perseverance. She wanted to see all of her family find success in life.

In 1950, she married Linton Cook and became the mother of four children.
With an entrepreneurial spirit, she started the first brick and mortar hair and Merle Norman studio on the island, Beach Beauty Salon. She was extremely grateful for the support she received from the community, as the sole provider for her four children.

In 1969, she married Franklin Holloway, where she added three additional children to her beautiful family. In 1974, Franklin and Kathleen had one child together.
In the years that followed, she continued to pursue other endeavors, as the owner of The Clothes Closet, and subsequently a real estate career.

For years, she remained steadfastly dedicated to her family, during which time she lost her only two sons. She persevered continuing to be involved in her church, and community, content in her home for her remaining years.

Besides her parents, she joins her beloved husband, Franklin Holloway and sons, Les Cook and Steve Cook, brothers and sisters in Heaven.

Our mother is survived by her daughter Gail Wood of Fernandina Beach, FL.; her daughter, Rita Hansen (Bruce Hansen) of Chattanooga, TN; her daughter Kathryn Rushing of Fernandina Beach, FL, and her additional children Donna, Frank, and Cheryl. Her only surviving sibling, Alvin Strickland (Peggy Strickland); her 14 grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren; her extended family and friends.

She is reunited in rest with those who passed before her, leaving behind cherished memories that will live on in the hearts of her loved ones.

A service will be held on Friday, August 22, 2025 beginning at 11:00 AM at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church. The family will receive friends at Burns Hall from 10:00 AM until the hour of the service.

She will be laid to rest beside he husband, Franklin and her two sons, Les and Steve Cook at Bosque Bello Cemetery directly after the service.

Donations may be made in her memory to the Barnabas Center or Council on Aging.

The family would like to acknowledge and thank Vitas Hospice and her loving nurses and caregivers, Tomeka Moore, Donna Prom and Soraya Williams.
