Ms. Betty Bowen Poland, 88, of Fernandina Beach, FL passed away Saturday December 3, 2016 at Quality Health in Fernandina Beach. A native of Fernandina, Ms. Poland was the daughter of the late Clement Bowen and Mary Jane Rival Bowen. Her father, Clem, was a shrimper in the Fernandina area where Betty attended school. She married at an early age and eventually moved to Morgantown, West Virginia where she reared her family. Her beloved son, Alan McCartney, and her brothers, Clem, Jr and Eugene, preceded her in death. Ms. Poland enjoyed travel. She drove coast to coast in the USA a number of times, loved train travel, and embarked on a bus tour of Europe at age 84. Ms. Poland was of the Episcopal faith. Ms. Poland leaves behind her son and daughter-in-law Glenn and Tannis Curls of Fernandina Beach; her son, Mark Harris of Jacksonville, FL; her daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca McCartney and Dewain Hanlon of Fernandina Beach; three Grandchildren and eight Great-Grandchildren. The family received friends from 4-6 PM Monday at the Oxley-Heard Funeral Home. Funeral services were held at 11:00 AM Tuesday at the graveside in Bosque Bello Cemetery with Rev. Jackie Hayes officiating.
