Bobby John Mayne

2022-07-19

Mr. Bobby John Mayne, 85, of Fernandina Beach passed away peacefully Tuesday, July 19, 2022 at Memorial Hospital, Jacksonville surrounded by his loving wife of nearly 52 years and family.

Born in Valdosta, Georgia, he was the son of the late James Arthur and Willie Mae Gilpen Mayne. He was educated in the Valdosta school system and was a 1955 graduate of Valdosta High School.

Bobby worked for The Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company for almost four decades. He started as a Store Manager and eventually worked his way up to Territorial Sales Manager and was the Top Salesman in the country for several years. His goal was to retire by age 60 and he accomplished this with 6 months to spare!

In 1984 he and his wife, the former Ann Mitchell of Waycross, Georgia, moved to Fernandina Beach from Tallahassee. They enjoyed their life here on the island very much, both having come to love Fernandina back in their youth. He was an avid fisherman throughout his life and formerly enjoyed hunting and golf. His vegetable garden and citrus trees were the envy of the neighborhood but he loved sharing the bounty!

Bobby had a wonderful and charismatic personality. He loved to entertain and thoroughly enjoyed music. Nothing pleased him more than sharing his love of music by playing his jukebox for family and friends in his media room.

During retirement he and Ann were able to travel extensively, both in the United States and abroad. They enjoyed many cruises together around the world as well as traveling on their own to many parts of the world.

In addition to his parents, Bobby was predeceased by a brother, Willie Arthur Mayne and a sister, Carolyn Graff.

He leaves behind his wife, Ann Mitchell Mayne; his children, Louise Mayne Long of Alpharetta, Georgia, Robert Arthur (Gloria) Mayne of Valdosta, Georgia and Cynthia (Givi) Soltani of Sanford, Florida as well as a grandson, Derek Mayne of Valdosta, Georgia.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, July 27, 2022 at Oxley-Heard Funeral Directors from 5:00 until 7:00 PM.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 28, 2022 at First Presbyterian Church of Fernandina Beach beginning at 2:00 PM. There will be a reception for family and friends following the funeral service in Jim Thomas Hall.

He will be laid to rest, at a later date, at Bosque Bello Cemetery.
