Bruce James "BJ" Kraus

2026-01-21

Bruce James “BJ” Kraus, of Fernandina Beach, Florida, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, surrounded by love.

BJ was born on February 24, 1951, in Duluth, Minnesota, to the late Ned and Alice Kraus. He grew up in Michigan and graduated from Alma High School before earning a Bachelor’s degree in Wildlife Conservation from Central Michigan University. In 1976, BJ moved to Florida, where he began both his lifelong career of service and the life he built with his family.

That same year, BJ joined the Jacksonville Fire Department as a Firefighter/Paramedic. Over the course of 28 years, he proudly served the community, rising through the ranks and concluding his distinguished career as District Chief of Rescue. His dedication, leadership, and unwavering commitment to helping others left a lasting impact on those he served alongside and the countless lives he touched.

BJ will be remembered for his kind heart, strong work ethic, and quiet dedication. He was deeply passionate about health and fitness and could often be found lifting weights, rowing, or tackling the stair climber. Above all, he cherished time spent with his family—duck hunting with his brother in Michigan, relaxing by the pool, or walking his beloved dogs along the beach at sunrise.

BJ is survived by his devoted wife, Donna Kraus; his children, Robin and Alexandra Kraus, both of Fernandina Beach; and his brother and sister-in-law, Mark and Darlene Kraus, of Michigan.

A memorial gathering to celebrate BJ’s life will be held from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM on Friday, February 6, 2026, at Shuckers Restaurant in Fernandina Beach, Florida.
