Caroline Ross Burroughs

2026-06-03

Caroline Chandler Ross Burroughs was born in 1932 in Jacksonville, Florida, to Sally Ann Chandler and John William Ross. She spent her early years in Jacksonville. Following the passing of her father in 1936, her family moved to Green Cove Springs, Florida, where she enjoyed a wonderful childhood on the St. Johns River, swimming, boating, and fishing, as well as playing in the woods that then surrounded their home.

Caroline attended Salem College in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and in 1953 married Richard Bernard Burroughs, Jr., known as Dick, also from Jacksonville, where they made their home. Together, they raised two sons, Richard Bernard Burroughs III (Richard) and William Chandler Burroughs (Chandler). The family enjoyed sailing and boating on the St. Johns River and in the Caribbean, as well as summers in Green Cove Springs, which everyone loved, Caroline most of all. An active gardener, she spent many happy hours working in the yard, her “hands in the dirt.” She was also an avid bridge and tennis player.

She was a member of the Debutante Coterie of 1952, the Florida Yacht Club, and the Junior League of Jacksonville. As a member of the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America, Caroline traced her ancestry back to Dr. John Woodson of Jamestown, Virginia. She served as an active volunteer for the Children’s Museum (now the Museum of Science and History) and her children’s schools. She attended St. Mark’s Church in Jacksonville.

A few years after Dick passed in 2013, Caroline moved to Osprey Village, a retirement community on Amelia Island, where she took part in many activities and made new friendships, while still treasuring her friends from Jacksonville. Her greatest happiness came from her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, whom brought her so much joy and made her very proud.

Caroline is survived by her sons Richard (Nancy Bartmess) and Chandler (Janie Lobley); her grandchildren Hadley Ross Burroughs (Pat Grandt), Richard Bernard Burroughs IV (Christina), Sally Burroughs Tickell (Brett), and Annice Burroughs Watson (Mike); her great- grandsons Michael David Watson and James Garland Tickell; and several nieces and nephews. Instead of flowers, please consider a contribution to the Jacksonville Zoo and Botanical Gardens, the National Society of The Colonial Dames of America in the State of Florida (NSCDA-FL), or to a charity of your choice.

A graveside service will be held at Evergreen Cemetery, 4535 N Main St, Jacksonville, FL 32206, on Friday, June 19th, at 10:30 am, followed by a reception at Park Plaza Condominiums’ River Room, at 12 noon.
