What an incredible woman...my dearly loved neighbor who sent the most wonderful Christmas cards from her great journeys...my favorite was the one with her surrounded by Pygmies. I loved her dearly and we had great political discussions. I loved that she sent pizza over to our front porch late at night while my son and his friends hung out and enjoyed it. You will be so missed dear friend.
Katharine Adair Waugh
the Hudson Valley. When Margaret & Meade were alive, we celebrated Christmas in Indiana.Thanksgiving was usually on Cape Cod, one memorable time at Plymouth Plantation, another on a tiny, cold island in the Netherlands. Carol's birding brought a new dimension to any get-together, as did her sense of fun. I will miss her sorely.
Caroline Rowan Waugh Glass Wyatt
2024-09-10
Caroline Rowan Waugh Glass Wyatt, daughter of Meade Lanier Waugh and Margaret Mina Seabold was born in Richwood, West Virginia. She passed away in Amelia Island Tuesday, September 10, 2024. She called many places home as a child and an adult but cherished her almost 50 year years spent on Amelia Island.
Carol loved many things in her life, notably theatre, books, music, museums, gardening, sewing, needlepoint, and the natural life. She liked to camp to be closer to the sights and sounds of nature, and as a child and young adult, made many camping trips in North America with her family and the Girl Scouts. Camping led her to pursue many outdoor adventures, and in later years, there were camping trips in Alaska, Australia, Bhutan, and the Philippine Islands. She loved to travel and in 1982, on a trip to Africa with her mother, the “birding” bug bit her. She became an avid birdwatcher, traveling extensively in North and South America, Australia, Japan, India, Nepal, Bhutan, Africa, Eurasia and all of Southeast Asia. She also made two trips to Antarctica. One of those trips was on a Russian icebreaker to the Ross Ice Shelf. Her favorite bird was a penguin. She led many bird walks in Nassau County and lectured extensively as a volunteer about travel, birds, and the natural world.
After attending eight grade schools in eight years, she spent all four years of high school at South Side High School in Fort Wayne, Indiana. She attended Capitol University, Indiana University, The University of Hawaii, and Auburn University with majors in speech, theatre, English, Hawaiian Language, and ancient Hula.
Carol’s career included working in the art world and business world; her last position was as a saleswoman for Franklin Life Insurance of Springfield, Illinois. She was blessed with being able to volunteer many hours during her lifetime to Navy Relief, The American Red Cross, and Girls Scouts.
She helped to form and was a charter member of St. Luke Lutheran Church, Atlanta. Georgia and Amelia Plantation Chapel. She is a member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Fernandina Beach Florida. While living in Georgia, North Carolina and Alabama, she was very active in Lutheran Church Women activities.
In 1981, she helped form, and was a charter member of, the Amelia Community Theatre. She played many roles on and off the stage for a number of years at this all-volunteer theatre. She was a member of the Amelia Island Plantation Club where she enjoyed playing golf and tennis.
She was President of the Ladies Golf Association, as well as a member of Amelia Island Museum of History, The Duncan Lamont Historical Society, ARIAS, Florida Wildlife Federation, Friends of the Library of Nassau County, Our Greenway, Sierra Club, World Wildlife Fund, The Pocahontas County Historical Society, Marlinton, West Virginia and the Democratic Club of Amelia Island.
Along with Ele Colborn, deceased, she founded the Nassau County Bird Club. Carol was a member of Duval Audubon Society, Florida Ornithological Society, Georgia Ornithological Society, the Carolina Bird Club, National Audubon Society, and American Birding Association.
She is pre-deceased by husbands Ned Granger Glass of South Bend, Indiana and Alexander Knox Wyatt of Amelia Island, Florida. Also, by her brother, Robert Harlow Waugh of Port Ewen, New York and Buzzard’s Bay, Massachusetts, stepsons, Joseph Eugene Wyatt and David Henley Wyatt, brother-in-law, Henderson Wyatt, sisters-in-law, Martha Wyatt McMahan and
