Charles "Charlie" Lathrop George

Charles “Charlie” Lathrop George, 65, died Wednesday, August 21, 2024 at Baptist Health Hospital in Jacksonville, Florida. He was born in Savannah, Georgia son of F. Vreeland and Allene Wilkie George. He was baptized at First Baptist Church of Savannah and was active for many years. He was ordained as a deacon in January, 2003 and remained a member until his death.
Charlie graduated from Windsor Forest High School in 1976. Upon his graduation, Charlie attended Armstrong State College where he joined Phi Kappa Theta Fraternity and then Georgia Institute of Technology (his childhood dream and favorite football team) before graduating from Georgia Southern University in 1983 with a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering Technology. Charlie became licensed in Georgia, South Carolina, Florida, and Virginia.
He began his engineering career at Thomas and Hutton Engineering firm where he became a principal in the firm and retiring in 2017 after 27 years. Although he served as a structural/coastal consulting engineer along the southeast coast, Charlie was centered in Savannah where one of his many contributions was the new Tybee Pier. Charlie went on to serve Effingham County finally settling in Fernandina Beach, Florida. In 2020, he was hired as the Deputy City Manager/ Engineer as well as a brief stint as the interim City Manager. As the city engineer, Charlie directed major city projects including the completion of the flood protection wall on the south end of the city marina.
Charlie was preceded in death by his parents, F. Vreeland and Allene Wilkie George. Surviving are his wife of 37 years, Holly Smith and his children, Karsen Alexis Knarr (Robert), F. Vreeland George III, Lily Saylor George, Sisters Frances Arnsdorff and Jennifer Hartenhoff (Larry), Brother Lorne V. George (Sheila), Mother-in-law Sylvia Davis Smith, Sisters-in-law Patricia Dickson and Katherine (Kit) Elizabeth Neil (Todd), and many extended family and friends.
A service in honor of Charlie will be held at First Baptist Church of Savannah located at 223 Bull St. on Chippewa Square. The service will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, September 7, 2024. A reception will follow where everyone is welcome to visit with the family.
