Charles Demory Walker, a cherished husband, father, grandfather and friend passed away peacefully on Amelia Island, Florida, on July 10, 2024 at the age of 86. Charles was born on January 8, 1938 in Waycross, Georgia, to J.D. “Jimmy” Walker and Myrtle Anna Sceals Walker. His life was a testament to dedication, love and service to others.
Charles graduated from Waycross High School in 1956 and went on to attend the University of Georgia, where he earned a degree in business and was a proud member of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. In 1962 he married his beloved Elizabeth "Libby" Smith, also from Waycross. Together they built a family filled with love, welcoming their two daughters, Laura Elizabeth and Anna Kathleen.
Charles had a distinguished 27-year career in banking, which began in Charlotte, North Carolina. His career path took him and his family to various cities, including Gastonia, NC, Waycross, GA, Savannah, GA, Atlanta, GA and Augusta, GA. He retired in 1995 as the Augusta President of First Union National Bank of Georgia, leaving behind a legacy of hard work, determination and success.
Charles was deeply committed to his community. He was an active volunteer and board member for numerous organizations, including the United Way, Chamber of Commerce, Development Authorities, Art Councils and College Foundations. His dedication to service extended to his faith, where he was a devoted member of the Presbyterian Church, serving as a Deacon and singing in the choir.
In retirement, Charles and Libby enjoyed traveling extensively, exploring Europe and visiting all of the 50 United States in their RV. They split their time between Augusta and Aspen, Colorado, always staying close to their daughters and grandchildren; who brought immense joy to their lives.
Charles' kindness, generosity and genuine interest in others endeared him to a wide circle of friends. He was best known for his warm personality, humor, storytelling and toast making and that special twinkle in his eye. His personal pursuits of sailing, tennis, skiing and golf immensely enriched his life. His presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Charles is preceded in death by his parents, his brother, James Walker and his sister, Wynelle Walker Thomas. He leaves behind his devoted wife, Libby Smith Walker; his daughters, Laura Walker Edgar and Anna (Matt) Freedman; his grandchildren, Iain (Angie) Edgar, Avery Elizabeth Freedman, Haven Alexander Freedman and Ted Elijah Freedman; his sister-in-law, Joyce Walker; and his brothers-in-law, JL (Debbie) Smith and Dickey (Claire) Smith.
