Charles Roy Byrd

2024-08-16

Charles Roy Byrd, 63, of Fernandina Beach passed away Friday morning, August 16, 2024, at the Warner Center for Caring.

Roy was born in Tallahassee and was the son of Helga Mueller Cail and the late Charles Wesley Byrd

He was raised in Tallahassee where he attended Florida High School, the Developmental School of FSU and graduated from Florida State University with a bachelor’s degree in 1983. He was a lifelong die-hard FSU football fan and ensured he and his family made it to as many games as possible. Roy eventually settled in Fernandina Beach in 1986 to take ownership of a State Farm Insurance agency. Following advice he was given prior to moving to Fernandina Beach, he integrated himself into the Fernandina Beach community and quickly became an irreplaceable member to our small town.

During his early years in Fernandina Beach, Roy was involved in the local Optimist Club. He worked tirelessly in the Big Brother & Big Sister Program. Roy further solidified his integration into the community when he married a local girl, the former Donna Garner. Their marriage would last for the next 30 years. Roy was also heavily involved as a member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Parish where he worked with the Men’s Missionary Group. In addition to his many community activities, Roy enjoyed being involved in the Southern Kingfish Association for many years, even winning the 1998 National Championship.

After his son, Cody, was born Roy became involved as a coach and Treasurer in both the local Pop Warner football league and the Babe Ruth baseball league. As Cody became older and played football for Fernandina Beach High School, Roy served as the President of the Quarterback Club. While there he worked tirelessly in fund raising for the football program and the Quarterback Club.

Roy will always be remembered as a man who loved his wife, his son and his family unconditionally. He always set the bar high for himself and worked to achieve his goals. He was loyal to those who he knew him as a friend.

In addition to his father, he was predeceased by his stepfather, Cliff Cail.

He leaves behind his wife. Donna Garner Byrd; his son, Cody (Jade Burling); his mother, Helga Cail, all of Fernandina Beach; his brothers, Ronnie Cail (Pat) of Big Canoe, Ga and Murry Cail (Dawn) of Rome, GA as well as several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

A service to remember and celebrate his life will be held Thursday, September 5, 2024 beginning at 11:00 AM at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church.

Roy will be laid to rest at St. Peter’s Cemetery following the service in the church.

Rather than flowers please remember Roy with donations, in his memory, to the Lifeworks Wellness Center of Clearwater and Community Hospice.
