Chief Joseph Pascarella

2019-02-26

Chief Joseph Pascarella, USN, Ret., 92, passed away Tuesday, February 26, 2019 with his family by his side at the Warner Center for Caring.

Born in New Haven, Connecticut he was a son of the late John and Elvira Berte Pascarella.

He served his country in the United States Navy and retired as a Chief Petty Officer after 30 years of service.

After the Navy, Joe worked for several years as an Electrician for Schultz Electric and for Bellinger Electric.

He and his wife of 43 years, Betty, moved to Fernandina Beach nearly five years ago from Cheshire, Connecticut. In Cheshire he was an active parishioner of the Church of the Epiphany. He was an eucharistic minister administering the sacraments to those in the hospital and homebound.

After moving to Fernandina Beach his faith life continued to be important to him as he was a parishioner at St. Francis of Assisi Mission in Yulee.

Joe loved all types of music but was especially fond of classical music. In addition to music, he also loved to dance. It was on the dance floor he and his dear Betty met. While stationed in Jacksonville, he and Betty were attending a dance at the St. Johns Bluff Road Armory. Betty asked him to dance and it began their love story.

Joe was a loving Godly father and grandfather. There was never a time that he was not telling his family that he loves them, and God loves them. He shared scriptures and parables with them often, always explaining the meaning of them to the young.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Louis and a sister, Phyllis; two daughters, Sherry and Lynn and a son, Terry.

He leaves behind his wife, Betty Pascarella of Fernandina Beach; his children, Donna Pascarella of New Haven, CT, Louis Pascarella of New Haven, CT, Geraldine (Jim) Shaffer of Conneauet, OH, Robert Little of Fernandina Beach, Regina Pascarella of New Haven, CT, Tammy (Mark)DeLa Cruz of Fernandina Beach, Malvira (Michael) Pecor of East Haven, CT, Yvonne (Richard) Rice of Jacksonville, and JoeyLynn Pascarella of Charlotte Hall, MD; a brother, Vincent (Lorraine) Pascarella of Norwalk CT; a sister, Annette (Phillip) Boeding of Madison, CT; 28 grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren and one great- great grandchild.

Services for Mr. Pascarella will be held Tuesday, March 5, 2019 at 12:00 PM in the Burgess Chapel of Oxley-Heard Funeral Directors with Deacon Brian Campbell officiating. The family will receive friends beginning at 11:00 AM.

He will be laid to rest, with Military Honors, at Jacksonville National Cemetery at 2:00 PM.

The family asks that donations be made, in his memory, to St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Mission, 86000 St. Francis Way, Yulee, FL 32097.

Im sorry for your loss ; I know from reading about Joseph that he truly was a very special person. I believe that through him that theres a lot of people that have more insight to our Lord. I know that your loss is one, that will be with you forever. He not only served his country but he also has served Our Lord by spreading his words. Making sure that everyone understood what our Lord and savior had in mind. His Brothers and Sisters from all of the military branches will not forget him.
Again I would like to send my condolences to you and your family in your time of greif. Also I want to thank you and your family for his time in the service preserving our freedoms that we have.

I can relate to the loss the family suffers. As a 70 year old I have lost loved ones far to soon. I did not know Joseph personnely but as a retired Navy Chief Petty Officer I have seen several good brothers depart.
