My heart breaks to learn of Clayton’s passing. I was blessed to have called him friend and have so many fond memories of the evening chats with both Carol and Mr B. Two of the finest people I have ever known. Rest in peace, my friend. My condolences to the family. Much love to you all.

Clayton Walton Buchanan, II
2023-05-29
May 29th, 2023, Clayton Walton Buchanan II, 90, of Fernandina Beach, FL, passed away peacefully at home with his beloved family by his side.
Clayton was born in Macon, Georgia in 1933, the son of the late Henri Smith Buchanan and Joseph Douglas Buchanan. He is predeceased by his brother Joseph Douglas Buchanan Jr. and sister Ann Buchanan Haugabook. Clayton was an All Star Football player at Lanier High and received offers to play at the collegiate level before attending the University of Georgia alongside his brother and joining the Kappa Alpha Fraternity. Clayton married his college sweetheart, Carol Quillian Buchanan after graduating from the University of Georgia in 1955.
Clayton joined the U.S. Army and moved with his beloved wife to Texas to serve at Fort Hood for two years before their growing family relocated to Atlanta and finally settled in Augusta, Georgia. Clayton is predeceased by his wife, Carol Quillian Buchanan, daughter Mary Walton Buchanan of Fernandina Beach and grandson Thomas Walton Harris. He is survived by his son Clayton Walton Buchanan III (Jennifer) of Fernandina Beach, daughters Martha Starr Buchanan (Chris) and Carol Buchanan Vernon (Steve) of Augusta and grandchildren Laura, Lindsey, Elizabeth, Sydney, Jessica, Sarah, Clayton IV and great granddaughter, Charlotte.
Clayton was a respected businessman in Augusta, Georgia with many successful ventures, most notably the B & B Lumber Company. He was a member of the Board of Directors at First Federal Bank, Augusta Country Club, Pinnacle Club and Kiwanis Club in Augusta, Georgia.
Clayton enjoyed golfing, boating and flying. He earned his pilot’s license and enjoyed flying recreationally for many years between Augusta, Georgia and Fernandina Beach, Florida in his beloved Beechcraft Bonanza.
Clayton enjoyed his retired years in Fernandina Beach at the “Nanahcub” beach house where he enjoyed daily walks on the beach to the pier and trips to the Smile Gas station, keeping up with Georgia Football, grilling and quality time with family.
Affectionately known as “Big Clay” and “Mr. B” to many friends and family, Clayton was a southern gentleman at heart and will be fondly remembered for his witty sense of humor, toughness and uplifting spirit. Though we mourn his passing, let us also celebrate a life that touched so many and left an enduring legacy of hard work, resilience and love of family. May his light continue to shine bright in our memories.
Clayton will be laid to rest in Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah, Georgia at a later date.
Rather than flowers the family asks donations be made to the University of Georgia in his Memory. UGA Foundation, University of Georgia, Athens, GA 30602.
