Colin M. ONeill
2016-05-12
A Memorial Mass will be held for Colin Michael ONeill on at 10AM on Friday, April 29, 2016, at Church of the Assumption, St. Paul, MN, Fr. John Malone presiding. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service time.
Colin passed away in his beautiful waterside home at Oyster Bay Yacht Club, Fernandina Beach in the arms of his wife and children on April 19, 2016 following a brief battle with cholangiocarcinoma.
Colin was born April 15, 1955, in Minneapolis, MN to Eunice Maerz ONeill and Robert ONeill. Growing up in the close-knit community surrounding Rice Creek in Fridley, MN, and into a large, sports-enthusiastic family, he developed numerous friendships and lifelong loves of tennis, golf, baseball, swimming and boating. He graduated from Fridley High School, received his B.S. in horticulture from University of Minnesota and his MBA from University of St. Thomas. He married Paulita LaPlante on September 6, 1980. With a couple of shovels, lawnmowers and a used plow truck, Colin and partner, Mike Teichert, started Prescription Landscape, Inc. in 1981. Under Colins business and financial leadership, the company is now a multimillion dollar business serving corporate clients in Minnesota. He actively served as mentor to many in the industry and nurtured innumerable careers. An avid golfer for many years, Colin routinely played at his golf clubs in Mendota Heights, MN and Naples, FL, and delighted in the camaraderie of his circle of friends. He and Paulita visited Ireland on numerous occasions and maintained friendships in the Cork music scene. In 2013, Colin decided upon a new passion and bought a 36 Sea Ray, Late Date in order to fulfill another dream navigating the Mississippi, Tenn-Tom and Gulf of Mexico. He accomplished this in 2014 with various family and friends joining him on the trek from Bayport, MN to Fernandina Beach. Colin was joyful to be alive each day and was generous in his delight and fortune with family and friends. He was extremely proud of his children, Kerry and Carly, and enthusiastically mentored them and served as a volunteer throughout their swimming careers on Dolphin Aquatics swim club and St. Thomas Academy and Visitation swim teams.
Colin is survived by his mother Eunice, wife, Paulita, son Kerry ONeill (Avery), daughter Carly and son-in-law Mitch Haugen, grandchild, Noah Haugen, brothers Kevin (Peggy), Mark (Cheryl), Scott, Brian (Barb), sisters Barb Milton and Margaret (Gary) Pillsbury and numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Colin was preceded in death by his father, Robert.
Memorials are preferred to Catholic Charities.
