David D. Mudd

2017-04-15

David de Sales Dave Mudd Sr., 84, of Amelia Island, passed away peacefully Saturday, April 15, 2017, surrounded by his family.

David was born on his mothers birthday, Aug. 21, in Winchester, Va. He was the son of the late Richard Edlen and Sara Jane Burke Mudd. At an early age, he moved to Towson, Md., where he grew up in a large family. Dave was the youngest of 13 children. He graduated from Towson Catholic High School and attended college before joining the United States Air Force. He was very proud of time spent serving his country. In 1953, he married his best friend and love, Fran Mudd. Their life together was full of adventure. After many stops along the way, he moved to Amelia Island in 1973. He retired after 40 years as an air traffic controller with the Federal Aviation Administration.

Dave was a caring, loving and kind person. He was known for his quick wit, and rarely did a day go by that he didnt make someone laugh or smile by telling a story or joke. His laughter was quite infectious. He was a family man and was always involved in family activities. Dave liked to travel and play golf, bridge with Fran and cards with his family. He always made sure his family was happy and well cared for. Dave and Fran were often involved in community projects. He was an avid Baltimore Orioles fan and attended many games by traveling to various ballparks to cheer on his Os. Dave also enjoyed spending time with his dogs, Sadie and Sheldon.

In addition to his parents, Dave was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary Frances Boland Mudd; his son-in-law, Jeffery Johnson; and his 12 brothers and sisters.

Survivors include his four children; David D. Mudd Jr. (Angeline), Dr. Margaret A. Peggy Mudd and Patrick R. Mudd, all of Fernandina Beach, and Mary Ellen Mudd Johnson of Fleming, Ga.; two grandsons, Jason (Tabitha) Mudd of Fernandina Beach, and Gabriel Mudd (Alex) of Jackson, Tenn.; four great-grandchildren, Molly and Simon Mudd of Fernandina Beach, and Aidan and Amelia Mudd of Jackson; his sister-in-law, Margaret A. Peggy Ousborne and brother-in-law, Dr. Albert Ousborne of Baltimore; and numerous beloved nieces and nephews.

His family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Friday, April 21, at Oxley-Heard Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 22, at St. Michael Catholic Church. He will be laid to rest with his wife at Bosque Bello Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made in Daves name to Community Hospice & Palliative Cares Warner Center for Caring, 1348 S. 18th St., Fernandina Beach, FL 32034.
