David Scott Murphy

2019-01-19

David Scott Murphy, age 71, of Fernandina Beach passed away on January 18, 2019.

He is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 46 years Denise; his daughter Brooke and son-in-law Jonathan; his grandson Henry; his brother Robert; and the many other friends and relatives for whom he was always like a father or big brother.

Born and raised in Manchester, CT, he volunteered for the Army and served in Army Intelligence in Okinawa and Vietnam.

After graduating from Eastern Connecticut College on the GI Bill, he worked for the Providence & Worcester Railroad before joining the postal service and becoming postmaster in Hopedale and Uxbridge, MA. Always quick with a joke, he will be remembered for his sense of humor, his silly games in the ocean with his grandson, his passion for the environment, and his selfless kindness toward everyone he met. David was passionate about leaving the world a better place for the next generations.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sierra Club at sierraclub.org/memorial or another environmental charity.

Services will be at 2:00 pm on Thursday, January 24,, 2019 at Oxley-Heard, 1305 Atlantic Ave., Fernandina Beach, Florida

The family will receive friends from 1:30 pm until the hour of service.

Denise, I am so sorry. I was shocked when I heard this news. David was always someone I looked up to and respected. Denise you and David and Brooke and Jonathan made such a wonderful family together I cant even imagine the heartbreak. He was so much about the family it was just beautiful and that love he had for Henry his grandson was a joy to see. I hope you all can find some kind of peace through this difficult time. With love and sympathy cousin Chuck.

LINDA DELANEY-TREXLER January 22, 2019
Oh Denise, I am so, so sorry. I just read this and the shock is profound. We have many memories, beautiful ones, starting with Brooke on the inside (!) in Grafton, long ago. Her birth, the wedding singer, the train guy, the postmaster. The Uxbridge apt, the log cabin with the stump cutting board /island, the Douglas hiatus, The Big Move south. Through it all, Davids humor, his love for you, Brooke Jonathan and Henry has shown through like a beacon, lighting the way forward. I have no doubt that that love will continue to undyimgly light the way for all of you throughout the rest of your lives and afterward. Thats gotta be the power of love, dont you think? I want to think I ll feel Davids presence again. Its been such a good one. My thoughts and love are constantly with you during this enormously hard time.
