Deborah G. Harrington

2017-10-11

Deborah Gayle Harrington, age 64 of Fernandina Beach passed away on Tuesday, October 10, 2017 at Baptist Medical Center in Jacksonville, FL.

Born October 19, 1952 in Stamford, Connecticut, she was the daughter of Fredric S. Lanyon and Margaret (Nolen) Lanyon, both of Stamford, CT.

Deborah graduated from Brian McMahon High School in Norwalk, Connecticut and then graduated from Western New England College in Springfield, MA with a BA in English Literature in 1973. She met her husband, Steve in college. She was in the Ski Club and he was so smitten with her that he went out and bought ski equipment just to meet her. He had never skied before.

As an undergraduate, she interned as a reporter for two summers with the (Stamford) Advocate in Stamford, Connecticut. After she married Steve, he took her back to Korea where he was stationed. She worked for the U.S. Forces Korea (UNC/USFK/EUSA) in Seoul. They lived there for another two years before returning to civilian life.

She also worked Public Relations with the Financial Accounting Standards Board for many years. Later, she worked public relations and crisis communications (both national and international) for Deloitte and Touche. Deb retired from Deloitte over two years ago. Deb and Steve wanted to leave their home in Stamford, CT for a more benign climate. They searched far and wide. Because of their connections to both sailing and automobiles, Amelia Island was a logical choice. They were struck by the beauty of the place but more importantly, the character of the locals, which made the decision easy.

She was an avid blue-water sailor, having sailed the Atlantic Coast, the Bahamas, the Exumas and the Eastern Caribbean with her husband. In addition, she was a fan of all things automobile. She was a regular attendee at the Pebble Beach Concours in Carmel, CA, the Amelia Island Concours and many others. She has lived in Asia, North America and Europe.

She was a member of Women in Communications in Stamford, Connecticut and a volunteer at the Barnabas Food Bank here in Fernandina Beach.

She is survived by her husband of 43 years, Stephen T. Harrington of Fernandina Beach; one son, Christopher Michael Harrington of Greenwich, CT; two sisters Nancy Reitzler of San Diego, CA and Sharon Giannini of Bridgeport, CT; and several nephews.

The family will receive friends from 4:00 to 6:00 pm on Monday, October 30, 2017 at Oxley-Heard.
