My deepest sympathies to Jeanne, James and Jonathan. I had the great privilege of working for Don from 2002 until his retirement in 2021 (in several capacities). He sometimes had more faith in my abilities than I did and was a terrific mentor. Don often shared stories about Jeanne and the boys and was a true family man. He was very compassionate throughout my family losses and equally supportive of my artistic endeavors (always showing up at exhibits). He will be missed.

Don Traester — DT, as I always called him — was one of my greatest mentors, not only in the engineering profession but in life. He was compassionate, understanding, and a true professional with a wonderful sense of humor. Don had a way of making everyone he worked with feel appreciated, and he always made sure we knew he was there to support us. No matter the situation, DT was always available and ready to help. Don was also incredibly well prepared and thorough. He often carried multiple pens and extra copies of meeting agendas or documents—just in case. He brought a strong command of any subject into every discussion, not because he talked the most, but because he listened so well. What I will never forget about Don is how thoughtful and caring he was. In 2002, after I moved to Massachusetts to work at Northfield Mountain, I happened to be driving behind him one day after work. He pulled over and signaled for me to do the same. I thought something was wrong. Instead, knowing I was new to the area, he invited me to his home that evening to meet Jeanne, James, and Jonathan and to stay for dinner. On another day—one of those snowy New England afternoons—Don finished clearing off his own car and then came over to help clear mine. Anyone who knew Don knows how much he disliked the cold and the snow, which made that small act of kindness even more meaningful. Some of my most treasured memories include Don driving to Connecticut to attend my U.S. citizenship swearing-in ceremony, and then, a few years later, Don and Jeanne joining Natalie and me at our wedding. Their presence meant so much to us, and Don remains a warm memory from that day. If something mattered to you—whether it was work-related or personal—it mattered to Don. His compassion, his work ethic, his curiosity, and his friendship made a lasting impression on me and on so many others. Thank you, DT. You will be missed greatly.

I was lucky enough to get to know Don through work at several Northeast Utilities hydroelectric plants. Don was always fair and professional and was frequently the cool head and voice of reason in the room. I always enjoyed spending time with Don in both business and social situations. Please accept my most sincere condolences.

Dave & Beth Patla

I am so sorry to hear of Don's passing. I worked with Don for many years and he was the most professional and dedicated person I've had the pleasure to work with. I will miss our get togethers discussing classic cars, especially his admiration of Packard automobiles. We are grateful for our memories of our visit to Amelia Island.

Bonnie and Dennis

Donald Edward Traester

2025-11-30

Donald Edward Traester, 68, of Fernandina Beach, Florida and Amherst, Massachusetts, peacefully passed away on November 30, 2025, at his home on Amelia Island.

Born on June 5, 1957, in New Haven, Connecticut to the late William James Traester, Jr. and Dorothy Wilson Traester, Don was raised in Oxford, Connecticut with his brothers, Robert F. Traester and the late William J. Traester, III. After graduating from Seymour High School in 1975, Don attended the University of Connecticut and graduated in 1979 with an engineering degree. Thereafter, he received a Master’s in Engineering Management from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Don spent his entire professional career devoted to hydroelectricity, starting at Northeast Utilities in 1982 and continuing with the company until his retirement in 2021. He was passionate about the intersection of hydropower and environmental conservation, developing fish ladders in Western Massachusetts among many other projects.

In 1987, Don married Jeanne Marie Franceschina, and they welcomed two children into their home in the 1990s. His children remember him as a dedicated Father who always ensured that they would put their best efforts into their pursuits.

Don was a classic car enthusiast who enjoyed attending car shows throughout the country with a particular appreciation for Packard automobiles. His favorite weekend of the year was The Amelia Concours d’Elegance, which was a driving force behind his decision to retire in Fernandina Beach.
Don leaves behind his wife, Jeanne, of 38 years and his sons, James (31) of Winston-Salem, North Carolina and Jonathan (28) of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. on December 5 at the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Fernandina Beach. He will be laid to rest in the Bosque Bello Cemetery.
