Donald Stephens Fergusson

2023-08-05

Youngest son of Dixie Martin Fergusson and Linton Stephens Fergusson, Donald Stephens Fergusson was born in Oak Park, Illinois. He grew up on the family farm in Hendersonville, Tennessee, graduating from Hendersonville High School in 1941.

He met his wife, Katherine, while in college in Victoria, Texas, where he enlisted in the U.S Air Force and worked on aviation navigation equipment. His lifetime passion for aviation led him first to Boeing and Cessna Aircraft Corporations in Wichita, Kansas, and Italy, and then to a 30-year career as engineer and project manager for Lockheed-Martin. A highlight of his time with Lockheed included many years working on various projects for Area 51 and Skunk Works.

Don lived a life of adventure, sharing family interests in aviation, car racing and sailing.

He passed away after a short illness close to his beloved home on Amelia Island, Florida, on August 5, 2023, at the age of 93. He is predeceased by his parents, brother Bill, sister Kay, wife Katherine of 50 years, and wife Barbara of 12 years. He is survived by sons Robert, Richard (Rick) and Debi, Dennis and Kerry, 7 grandchildren and 32 great and great-great grandchildren, nephews David Fergusson, James Fergusson and Billie Sue, and sister-in-law Dayle Fergusson.

Don was a man of honor and integrity, with a love of life, a great sense of humor, and an open hospitable heart. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

The memorial will be Sunday, August 20th at 11:00 am at Oxley Heard Funeral Home on Amelia Island. The family will receive friends from 10:00 until the start of service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations can be made to the Community Hospice Jane and Bill Warner Center for Caring on Amelia Island.
