Frank Englehardt III

Mr. Frederick Engelhardt III, age 74, of Amelia Island passed away on Thursday morning, August 11, 2016 at the Warner Center for Caring in Fernandina Beach.

Born in Rockwood, Tennessee on June, 30, 1942; he was one of two children and the only son born to the late Frederick Engelhardt II and Emily Wilson Engelhardt. At the age of sixteen his family moved to Punta Gorda, Florida, where his mother was a school teacher and his father, a news journalist. After graduating from Charlotte High School, Fred enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. One of his duty stations was in Washington, D.C. as part of the Ceremonial Guard Company, 8th and I. Upon transferring to Marine Corps Base Quantico, he served as a small arms instructor. After completing Aviation Electronics School, he was subsequently deployed to Vietnam with the First Marine Air Wing, where he served one tour.

Returning to the States, he remained on active duty, as an Avionics Technician until being honorably discharged in 1969 with the rank of Staff Sergeant.

Upon leaving active duty, he went to work as a systems engineer with Sperry Univac Corporation in 1969, where he worked until 1980. He was then employed by the Department of Defense and worked in data processing at Marine Corps Air Station, Cherry Point, NC until transferring to Naval Submarine Base, Kings Bay, GA where he was IT Director at Trident Training Facility, until retiring from Civil Service in July of 2001.

Fred was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in many capacities, leading up to becoming State Commander of the VFW for the state of Georgia, as well as several appointments at the VFW National level. He was also a member of other military organizations, including the Marine Corps Helicopter Association and the American Legion.

Fred leaves behind his wife of 53 years, Mary Stevens Engelhardt of Amelia Island and their son, Bill Engelhardt of Punta Gorda, FL.
