George Lawson Clucas (1943-2017)
George Lawson Clucas passed away on October 28, 2017 at his home in Amelia Island, Florida. The family will hold a private service.
George was born on September 25, 1943 in St. Louis, Missouri and was the second son of James McDevitt Clucas and Barbara Alexander Lawson. His family moved to Evanston, Illinois in 1947, where he grew up and graduated from Evanston Township High School in 1961. George went to Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois and earned a B.S. degree in Business Administration in 1965. During his sophomore to senior years, he was Millikins No. 1 singles player in tennis, a sport he greatly enjoyed and loved. George returned to Millikin as a board member from 1995-2004.
After graduating from college, George began working in 1965 for Pittsburgh Paint and Glass (PPG) with whom he would work for more than 20 years across several states and countries, including Illinois, Oklahoma, Missouri, Pennsylvania, and Italy. He also was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1966 and served a one-year service in Vietnam from January 1967-1968 as an air traffic controller. In 1987, George started working for Union Central Life as their vice president of equity investments in Cincinnati, Ohio, working his way up to senior vice president and president of the companys investment subsidiary Carillon Advisers until his retirement in 1999. He continued to be involved with personal investments after retiring.
George met his wife Maria Giordanengo in Cuneo, Italy in 1974, through their work with PPG, and they married four years later in Missouri when Maria and her daughter Antonella Marengo moved to the United States. George and Maria had two children, David (1978) and Barbara (1980). The family lived in Pittsburgh from 1978-1987, then Cincinnati, Ohio from 1987-2002.
In 2002, George and Maria retired to Amelia Island, Florida where George was able to pursue his passion for golf. He was an active member of the Amelia River Golf Clubs River Rats team. He also greatly enjoyed traveling, watching sports and continuing to follow his investments.
George was a dearly loved husband, father, grandfather and friend. He was a patient and kind man that gave great financial and life advice as well as great golf tips. He will be greatly missed by all those that knew him and whose lives he touched.
