Gilberto Fernando Acosta

2023-05-09

Gilberto “Gil” Fernando Acosta, 86, passed away on May 9th, 2023 in Fernandina Beach, Florida.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Irene, also of Fernandina Beach, FL, to whom he was always deeply dedicated in life. He was also preceded by parents Fernando & Julia Acosta of Key West, FL; his brother, Paul Crespo of Corpus Christi, TX; his sister, Martha Canalejo of Key West, FL; and special mentor & friend, Harold Casterson.

Gil is survived by, and will be missed greatly by, his sister, Irma Acosta Revoredo (Carlos); his chosen daughter, Kathy Silva (George), and his many dearly loved nieces and nephews to whom he was always a wonderful father figure: Ray Canalejo (Mary), Susan Crespo (Lana), Tina Bridwell (David), Cynthia Hernandez (Bruce), Donald Canalejo (Mark Vose), Nicholas Revoredo (Jackie), Jennifer Railey (Lawrence), Lucinda Silva (Christy), and Shelly Silva. He is also survived by dear cousins, Alicia Vargas Eimers, Lionel “Butch” Vargas (Anita), and many other great nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.

Graduating from Key West High School, he went on to higher education in Tampa, Louisiana, and finally his cherished alma mater, the University of Miami. He was very dedicated to the university, a lifelong ‘Canes fan, and would often volunteer there with the summer band camp with his friend Harold Casterson; where he was a regular fixture for many years. He was also a passionate collector of rare coinage and was often seen in coin shows and events around the state.

Gil did not want any services, but rather to have his life celebrated by friends and family, remembered for his strength of character and wry smile. His ashes will be spread, in part by his wife’s final resting place, and in part in the waters of Key West; where his father was laid to rest.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Frost School of Music, Mann-Parente Fund for band students scholarships. P.O. Box 025388, Coral Gables, FL 33102-9811. In honor of Gilbert F. Acosta.
