To Glenda's Family- I had to pleasure of mutiple sessions of Physical Therapy with this sweet lady who could always make my day brighter with her smile. May she rest in peace and may her love comfort you.

Glenda C Barnes, 94, of Fernandina Beach, Florida passed away on Thursday, September 8th , 2022 at Baptist Medical Center, Nassau following a short illness.

Glenda was born on September 20th, 1927 in Andalusia, Alabama to the late Columbus Ostern Matthews and Colus Dee Durden. She spent her early childhood in Andalusia, Alabama and moved with her parents to Washington, D.C. in November of 1941. She graduated from Eastern High School in Washington, D.C. in 1945. Following graduation, she wed the late Roderick Barnes in November of 1945.

In early 1946, Glenda briefly worked for Standard Oil Company in San Francisco, California as an administrative assistant. After returning to Washington, D.C, later that same year, she joined Bogley, Harding and Betts Insurance Agency where she would be gainfully employed until she retired as Vice President in 1992.

Glenda moved to Fernandina Beach in 1997, with her companion of 51 years, the late Houston Swink. She became friends with many in the local area and enjoyed playing golf and cards with them on a regular basis. She was always passionate about life and treated others as she expected to be treated. She was very family oriented and loved her daughter and grandchildren dearly.

She was an active member of First Baptist Church in Fernandina Beach. She also participated in various local groups such as the Newcomers Group and the Nassau County Council on Aging. She also served as a volunteer with the Salvation Army Hope House.

Glenda was predeceased by her daughter, Sharon Barnes-Pace (1951-2015). She is survived by her grandchildren, Michael G. Santmyer of Fernandina Beach, Florida; Danielle L. Milloway of Alpharetta, Georgia; and Leah M. Parker of Kingsland, Georgia. She is also survived by her greatgrandchildren Brittany M. Lutz of Dayton, Ohio; Gary L. Milloway of Marietta, Georgia; Madison O. Santmyer-Reagin of Neosho, Missouri; and Allie M. Nieber of Darien, Georgia. In addition, Glenda is survived by two great-great grandchildren, Rylee M. Nieber and Forest T. Reagin.

A memorial service shall be held to celebrate Glenda’s life at First Baptist Church in Fernandina Beach, Florida on Monday, September 26th , 2022, at 10:00 AM.
