We were blessed to be there at Greg and Julie's wedding. We rejoiced when they celebrated the births of first their lovely Raleigh and then Greg's mini-me Carter. What a wonderful family; what a loving husband and Dad, loyal and loving to all his family, and a blessing to so, so many. Our hearts are so saddened for your loss even as we rejoice in Greg's promotion to Glory. We love and pray for you now and in the days to come. Buddy & Elaine

Dale Sikorsky (Tex)

I was deeply saddened to hear about Gregg’s passing. He was more than just a friend—he was family. I met Gregg after moving from Texas to Fernandina Beach in 1986, and he quickly took me under his wing, showing me the ropes of living in Florida. He was the first good friend I made after arriving in town. Before long, he gave me the nickname "Tex," a name that, unbeknownst to me, would stick with me for years. The entire Simmons family welcomed me as one of their own—though I’m not sure they had much choice since I was at their home so often. Gregg taught me how to fish, surf, and so much more, while his parents introduced me to the joy of good grits. Gregg made a lasting impression on my life, just as I know he did on so many others. To this day, every time I’m out on the water fishing, memories of him come rushing back. Not many people leave that kind of mark on someone’s life, even after 30 years. My heart and prayers go out to you and your family during this difficult time. As I say goodbye to my dear friend, I send these words: Fair winds and following seas, ole buddy. With deepest sympathy,

Shelly Fowler

Rest in peace, Capt Greg. You will be missed. Hugs to you Julie.

Gregory Quinn Simmons

2025-03-03

The family of Captain Gregory Quinn Simmons of Amelia Island, FL, with heavy but joyful hearts, announce the upgrade of Greg’s address to 3:16 Jesus Way on March 3, 2025 after a short stay at St. Vincent's Hospital in Jacksonville, FL.

Son of Ralph and Lou Cason Simmons, Greg was born in Savannah, GA, Nov. 9, 1969, and moved to Amelia Island as a toddler. From the moment his toes hit the sand, the blond-haired, green-eyed boy was in the waves with a fishing rod in his hand. As he matured, he was more interested in the sea than the shore, and after graduation from Fernandina Beach High School, pursued a career sportfishing. Greg found a home with Randy and Paula Ringhaver and The Ring Power Corporation where he served for over 30 years as captain of The Ring Leader. On this yellow vessel, Greg built relationships with hundreds of guests, helped them learn to love the sport as much as himself, established a program of excellence, and mentored those beside and behind him.

In 2000, Greg met Julie Slough Simmons, and the pair took on life together with a contagious energy. The only things Greg loved more than Julie and fishing were his children, Raleigh (17) and Carter (13) Simmons. Greg was a world-renowned fisherman, avid game hunter, outdoorsman, gardener, teacher, and friend... but what he did best was be a “dad.” There was no game, no request, no idea too big or too small that Greg wouldn’t take on for his family. He built a legacy on Piney Island Drive that was his pride and that Julie, Raleigh, and Carter will seek to honor for him.

Saving the best for last, Greg loved Jesus Christ and wanted his friends and family to know the peace and strength God gave him, especially during his fight with cancer in the last months. Greg was an active member of Mercy Hill Church in Yulee, FL, and sends thanks to this congregation as well as so many others in the community, country, and world who lifted him in prayer. Today we know that Greg is in the arms of Jesus and beside his late father, Ralph Elliott Simmons, while leaving behind his mother, Lou Simmons, brother Vann Simmons (Stacy), nieces, Reeves and Brooks, sister Allyson Etheridge (Brian), nephews, Reynolds and Hayes, in-laws Beverly and Wesley Slough and sister-in-law Elizabeth Southard (Matt), best friend Cris Holland (Misti, Chelsea, Shelbea), his favorite Poodle that he never wanted: Brooklet, a community of fisherman and Ring Leader guests, and dozens of family and friends. Greg’s life was blessed just like he blessed all in his midst.

Greg will be laid to rest by his immediate family in Pembroke, GA, beside his father and grandparents on Friday, March 7. All are invited to celebrate Greg’s life on Sunday, March 9 at half past two o’clock at Amelia Plantation Chapel, followed by a gathering at The Amelia Island Club (5 Ocean Club Drive).

If you wish to contribute to Greg’s legacy, The Fernandina Beach High School Foundation (PO Box 15726, Fernandina Beach, FL 32035, fbhsfoundation.org) will receive gifts to fund a fishing club, angler education program, and sea school scholarships for students wishing to pursue a life on the seas – just like Greg.
