Helen Horne

2016-08-08

Mrs. Helen Anne Suzy Horne, age 75, of Yulee passed away on Thursday evening, July 21, 2016 at her home.

Born in Buffalo, NY she was the only child born to the late Joseph and Mary Louise Rist. As a young child her family moved to Kingsland and later lived in the Oceanway section of North Jacksonville. She graduated from Technical High School in Jacksonville with a certificate as a Dental Hygenist. On Christmas Day in 1958 she married James Carroll Horne of Jacksonville. The newlyweds resided for a short time in the Riverview section of North Jacksonville and in Oceanway before moving to Yulee in the early 1960s. Since the early 1980s Miss Suzy has worked as a School Crossing Guard for the Nassau County Sherriffs Department. She never considered her job as work but more of a manner by which to interact with and help the generations coming behind her. While serving as a Crossing Guard at Emma Love, Yulee Elementary of Yulee Middle School she connected with each and every child; sharing in their achievements and disappointments. She was their road side tutor, counselor, cheerleader and confidant. Miss Suzy loved the holidays and shared that love with her students by dressing up and wearing fancy hats and painting her face to greet her kids in the mornings and afternoons. Her dress up to brighten their days earned her the name as The Crazy Hat lady. She touched more lives in a positive way than can be numbered.

In addition to the holidays and decorating her home and yard for each, she enjoyed being involved with the Callahan Railroad Days and Timberfest. She and her husband were members of the Yulee Lions Club, the Nassau County Democratic Party, volunteered at the Yulee Fire Department as EMTs and First Responders and were common fixtures at the voting polls. They were also instrumental in the political campaign of State Representative George Crady for 20 years. Miss Suzy enjoyed any hobby that involved arts and crafts, working her daily crossword puzzles at the kitchen table and keeping up with the latest episode of American Ninja and her favorite Soaps.

Since the 1980s she has been a member at Hedges Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by a son, James C. Jimmy Horne who passed away in 2012.

She leaves behind, her husband, James C. Horne, their son, John Michael Tiny Horne and his wife, Dee and a grandson, Tyler.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 pm on Friday, July 29, 2016 at Hedges Baptist Church with Reverend Mark Patterson, officiating.

Mrs. Horne will be laid to rest in Hughes Cemetery.

Her family will receive friends on Thursday from 5:00 7:00 pm at Oxley Heard .

An invitation is also extended to family, neighbors and friends to stop in on Saturday, at her home, and spend time with her family sharing more Crazy Hat stories.
