Helen Johnniemae Autry, 92, of Chester, Fla. passed away on Wednesday evening, October. 23, 2024, at Baptist Medical Center Nassau Community Hospice. Born on October 14, 1932, she was the third born child of 6 children Catherine, Agnes, Richard, Jimmy, John, born to Elnora Hopkins Calhoun and Horace Calhoun.
Helen Johnniemae Autry was born in Duval County and grew up around Nassau County and attended Peck High School where she met her future husband, Alonzo Autry Jr. Helen Autry worked at Faircloth’s Crab Plant in Fernandina as well as a Foodservice Manager for 33 years for Nassau County. In addition to Mrs. Autry’s work at Nassau County Food Service she served the community as First Lady and Minister of Music for Greater St. Matthews Baptist Church in Folkston, Ga., Yulee First Baptist Church and for the past 30 years as First Lady of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Chester.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband of what would have been 74 years Alonzo Autry Jr.
She leaves behind nine children Marie Autry, Fernandina Beach, Fla., Alonzo Autry III and his wife Sukchit, Yulee, Fla., Frank Autry and his wife Lessie, Jacksonville, Fla., Gary Autry and his wife Nanette, Fernandina Beach, Fla., Margaret Davis, Fernandina Beach, Fla., Antonio Autry and his wife Tami, Fernandina Beach, Fla., Phyllis Autry, Yulee, Fla., Michael Autry, Yulee, Fla., Daryl Autry and his wife Courtney, Clearwater, Fla.; a brother, John Calhoun of O’Neal; a sister in law, Drudella Calhoun of O’Neal; 22 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and a number of great-great grandchildren and nieces and nephews, Charles Calhoun, Jerry Calhoun, Larry Coleman, Ronald Coleman, Carlton Coleman, Bishop Thomas Coleman, Sr., Robert Coleman, Anthony Calhoun, Willie Scott, Cynthia Hardy, Horace Scott, Benjie Lang, Renee Calhoun, Precious White, Miranda Calhoun, William George, Beverly George, Ramona Baskin, Leola Albert, Helen Jean Albert, Spencer Albert and Eugene Albert as well as a host of extended family and friends.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 9,2024 at the First Baptist Church of Yulee, with the Rev. William Goode Jr. presiding and the Rev. James Payne officiating. Helen Autry will be laid to rest in O’Neal Cemetery. Her family will receive friends on Friday November 8,2024 from 5-7 p.m. at Oxley-Heard Funeral Home.
