Henry R. Berghoef

2023-03-30

A warm husband, compassionate father, and unconditionally loving brother and friend, Henry R. Berghoef died peacefully on Thursday, March 30th, at the age of 74. Born in Netherlands to Neal and Anna Berghoef, Henry moved to Holland, MI at the age of 7 with his four surviving siblings, Jack (Nancy) Berghoef, Hilda (Tim) Quist, Ena (Jerry) Gunnick and Joy (Anthony) Paige. Along with two beautiful children, Kacie Berghoef and David (Abby) Berghoef, Henry loved three step-daughters, Elizabeth Boyle, Kathleen (Philip) Doetsch, and Charlotte Boyle (Phil
Hall). In the end, his most cherished moments where with his three grandchildren, Tatum Hall, Scarlett Doetsch and Savannah Doetsch.

Seventeen years ago, Henry met his soul mate, Leslie Boyle, on a blind date. Little did they know that their children had been through the same school system and in the same classrooms together for over a decade. Among their many world travels together, the most memorable was in China in 2013, when Henry proposed to Leslie in a garden of flowers. They built a life full of beauty, kindness, generosity, and love. His final words were, “Hey, hottie!” pointed at his beautiful bride.

A rockstar investor, Henry spent more than a quarter-century in the investment industry after spending 10 years in various positions with the federal government. He joined Harris Associates as an investment analyst in 1994 and was Director of Research and co-manager of the Oakmark Select Fund when he retired. Henry’s stock picks led to the realization of dreams of countless investors in the Oakmark funds.

To document all of Henry’s achievements would overshadow the true nature of what Henry ultimately valued: humility, kindness, a hard worth ethic, and an undying devotion to those he loved.

He will be remembered as our sweet Henry and Henki (so-called by his grandchildren).

A gathering of gratitude for Henry’s life will be on Friday, April 28th, 2023, at 11 AM (EST) at Amelia Plantation Chapel, Amelia Island, FL.

Memorial contributions in Henry’s name may be made to: The Boys and Girls Club of Nassau County FL, P.O. Box 16003, Fernandina Beach, FL 32035 or Barnabas Center, Inc., 1303 Jasmine Street, Suite 101, Fernandina Beach, FL 32034.
