James L. Claxton

Mr. James L. Claxton, 87, of Jacksonville passed away at Sunrise Adult Living in Jacksonville on Monday, August 10, 2020.
Mr. Claxton was born in New York City and was a son of the late James B. and Anna Leonard Claxton.
He and his family moved to the Yulee area near the end of World War II. He graduated from Yulee High School and was a proud �Hornet�.
After school he would proudly serve as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U. S. Army. He was stationed in Germany after the war and it was there he would meet his future wife, Rosemarie. Their marriage would last some 57 years until her passing in 2013.
In 1957 they moved from Yulee to Jacksonville. In Jacksonville he would begin a career with the city as an Accountant in the Finance Department. After many years of service he would retire from the City of Jacksonville.
During his life in Jacksonville he was member of the Christ the King Catholic Church parish. He was also Treasurer of Boy Scout Troop # 5 in Jacksonville for many years.
Mr. Claxton loved walking, reading and playing bingo. He was described as a quiet �gentleman� who would help where ever he could. Even in retirement and after he moved to Sunrise Assisted Living he was happy to serve as their �Ambassador �. He loved to greet people and make new residents welcome whenever he could.
In addition to this parents and his wife, he was predeceased by his brothers, John D. Claxton and and Tom Claxton as well as his son, Francis C. Claxton.
He leaves behind his son, James Royce Claxton of Jacksonville and his daughter, Veronica Claxton Freeman of Yulee; four grandchildren, Ben (Katie) Freeman, Mallory (Bailey) Ghazi, Frankie (Molly) Claxton and Cameron Claxton, three great grandchildren, Lizzy Ghazi, Robert Ghazi and Banks Freeman.
Funeral services for Mr. Claxton will be held Saturday, August 15, 2020 at 11:30 AM in the Burgess Chapel of Oxley-Heard Funeral Directors. Fr. Jose Kallukalam of St. Michael�s Catholic Church will officiate.
The family will receive friends for the hour prior to the service.
He will be laid to rest with his wife at Hughes Cemetery in Yulee.
