James W. Delaney

Mr. James William �Jack� Delaney III, age 90, of Fernandina Beach, passed away at his home on Saturday evening, May 7, 2016.
Born in Fernandina, he was the last living of four children born to the late James W. Delaney II and Carol Elizabeth Cribb Delaney. Jack grew up in Fernandina where he attended Peck High School. At the age of 16 he enlisted in the United States Army and served during WW II in the European Theatre and the Philippines. Upon being honorably discharged he worked in Boca Grande for a short time before returning to Fernandina. Upon arriving back at home he accepted a job in the Wood Yard at Rayonier before joining Container Corporation of America on April 17, 1951 where he remained until retiring as a Scales Operator on December 31, 1983.
After retiring, Jack worked for the City of Fernandina Beach at the Martin Luther King Jr. Recreation Center. He was a staunch Democrat and could be found manning the Voting Polls at the MLK Center for many years.
Jack was an avid collector of various items to include coins and baseball cards; but is best known for his immense collection of campaign buttons and banners and especially items collected from his attendance at the Miami Democratic National Convention.
He and his family have a long history of membership and support of the First Missionary Baptist Church in Fernandina. He was presently a member of the First Assembly of God of Fernandina Beach.
Jack is preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Mamie Delaney, his brother, Alvin S. Delaney and his two sisters, Gloria Delaney Lampkins and Lillian Delaney James.
He leaves behind his children, Kenneth (Loice) Shephard, Jacqueline (Rev. James) Arthur, Ronald Shephard, Sara Knight, Marion (Parrish) Kirkland, Garry (Diana) Delaney, Grandchildren: Kenneth Jr. (Tangala) Shephard, Erick Knight, Monica (Rev. Timothy) Bessent, JeNell (Stanley) Marcel, Tameka (Paul) Simmons, Paula Knight, Dawn Arthur, Parrish Kirkland, James II (Kathleen) Arthur, William and Garris Delaney, Latoya Shephard, Keyona Dawson, sixteen great grandchildren; God Children, Allean Gilyard and Corliss Brown, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and many sorrowing friends, special niece, Betty Jean Lampkins and a dear special cribbage partner and friend Paul Thibault and the McDonald�s gang.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, May 14, 2016 at the First Assembly of God of Fernandina Beach with Reverend Edwin Schick, officiating. The cortege will assemble and depart from the residence.
Jack will be laid to rest, with military honors, beside his wife in Bosque Bello Cemetery.
His family will receive friends on Friday from 5:00 � 7:00 pm in the Burgess Chapel of Oxley Heard.
