I was so sorry to hear of Janis' passing. Like many others, I knew her and Jeff from high school. Didn't keep in touch with them very much, but I sure enjoyed reading Janis' wise and encouraging words on Facebook. May God bless her family.

Marsha Geraghty Starling

My heart goes out to you in the passing of your mother at such a young age. I knew Janis during my grade school years, but didn’t attend FBHS and lost touch with many people. However I was invited to a high school reunion and was delighted to spend some time with Janis and Jeff. She kept her childhood sweetness through her adult years. You were truly blessed. Keep those happy memories close. My sincere condolences

Janis Dougherty Johnson

2023-04-21

Janis Dougherty Johnson, 66, entered the Gates of Heaven on April 21, 2023 at Community Hospice Jane and Bill Warner Center for Caring, Fernandina Beach, Florida.

Janis was born August 27, 1956, at Humphrey’s Memorial Hospital in Fernandina Beach, FL. She was fourth of five children born to the late Melvin Foster and Lillian Mott Dougherty. She married Jeffrey Joseph “Jeff” Johnson in 1979 and they were married 35 years before his passing in 2015. Besides her husband and parents, Janis was predeceased by her sister, Stephanie Dougherty and brother Rocky Dougherty.

Janis was a member of the Fernandina Beach High School Class of ’74. After graduation, Janis worked for Prudential Life Insurance Company in Jacksonville for 5 years. After leaving Prudential, she began working in her hometown with Robert Johnson, DDS, where she was trained to be a dental assistant. After her marriage to Jeff, his employment led them to various cities where they lived and Janis had the opportunity to work at many locations as an orthodontic assistant before becoming a stay at home mom.

Growing up, Janis always wanted to be a wife and mother. She met Jeff while they were both attending high school. Little did she know that he would be the man God had designed just for her. Six years after they were married, God blessed them with their first child, a son, Aaron and 9 years later with a beautiful daughter, Amelia.

Janis would want to be remembered as a faithful follower of the Lord Jesus Christ. At the age of 12, Janis trusted Jesus as her personal Lord and Savior and her relationship with Him was the most important part of her life. If you knew Janis, you know she loved and trusted her Savior in all things. Even in her most recent difficult journey, she shared her faith, her joy, and the peace she had because she knew nothing could separate her from Jesus. She did then, and she would now, encourage others to read, and know, God’s word.

“Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path.” Psalms 119:105

Janis is survived by her son, Aaron Johnson of Yulee, daughter and son-in-law, Amelia and Jake, and her precious granddaughter, Noelle Neuhofer of Middleburg; sisters and brothers-in-law, Pam and David Cook and Dee Dee and Mark Thornton, sister-in-law Jean Dougherty and family, Uncle Gene Kyzer, all of Fernandina Beach; Aunt Pat Mott of Yulee; nephews, Dan Cook, David Mark and Christian Thornton; great nieces, Lillian Cook and Eleanor Thornton; numerous cousins and dear friends.

A memorial service to celebrate Janis’ life will be held at Legacy Church, 416 Alachua Street, Fernandina Beach, Florida, 32034 under the directions of Oxley Heard. The family will receive friends from 10:00 am until time of service at 11:00 am on Friday, April 28, 2023.

Rather than flowers, donations may be made to Community Hospice & Palliative Care, 4266 Sunbeam Road, Jacksonville, 32257
