David and Cynthia Sapp
Jayne was truly a very caring, kind, and thoughtful person. She always asked about our girls and how they were doing. She sent cards to let us know she was thinking of us if we had lost a loved one. She also made a trip with David to Montreat one year to be a chaperone for the Presbyterian Youth Fellowship. She was always willing to help any way she could. She will be missed. Prayers for the Conkin Family.

To the Conkin family, I was greatly saddened to hear of Jayne's passing. She was one of my role models growing up. She was kind, considerate and loving, sharing the love and acceptance of God with everyone. She will be missed terribly. She and all of you are in my prayers.

Jayne had a constant presence in my life, especially while living in Fernandina. I lost my grandmother at a very young age and Jayne served as a wonderful grandma (unknowingly). I’ll never forget all the shoeboxes filled with little things that she would send me. Those boxes always barely fit in my dorm’s mailbox! Jayne always reminded me to think of others first…she and my mom. I feel blessed to have been able to have her in my life. I just feel like there is too much to write. God bless her family.

I have taken care of Jane's hair for many years. She was without exaggeration among the finest women I have ever known. I feel blessed to have known her.
Jayne Ann Conkin
2022-12-22
Jayne Ann Conkin, age 77, of Fernandina Beach passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family on Thursday, December 22, 2022.
Jayne’s life was centered on her faith, her family and loving and helping others. She was born on November 28, 1945 in Marshalltown, Iowa. She grew up on a farm in central Iowa. She was active in 4-H club becoming president for the state of Iowa. After high school she attended Iowa State University where she earned a bachelor degree in home economics education in 1967. After graduating, she taught middle school in Marshalltown, Iowa. Jayne returned to Iowa State and earned a Master of Science degree in 1971. In 1972, the Conkin family moved from Iowa to Maryland which was a big adjustment for an Iowa farm girl. Jayne’s life was full, not only raising two young girls, but as an active member of the community. During these years Jayne was a girl scout leader, a substitute teacher and provided daycare in her home for neighborhood children.
In 1982, the family moved again to Fernandina Beach, FL. Jayne became an active member of the First Presbyterian Church serving as an elder, deacon, clerk of the session and Stephen minister. She also worked at the church office as a lay associate for several years. Jayne taught Sunday school, assisted in the nursery and participated in women’s circles and bible study. Jayne was a loving person with a positive attitude. She was always ready to help where there was a need or provide words of faith and encouragement.
To many who knew her she was known as the card lady. She never forgot a birthday, anniversary, special occasion or someone in need. She served on the board of the Nassau County Volunteer Center, was a girl scout leader and cookie chairman, volunteered at Barnabas, to name a few. In recognition, she was named the Elsie Harper volunteer of the year. Jayne loved playing card games and shopping. But she only bought something when she found a bargain.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Wayne and Genevieve Wolgamott, and two brothers, Robert and Mark.
Jayne leaves behind by her husband of 54 years, Merle E. Conkin; her two children, Jennifer (Bryan) Carrell of Tallahassee, FL, Jodi (Chris) Simpkins of Fernandina Beach, FL; three grandchildren, Tyler Carrell of Tallahassee, FL, Leigha Carrell of Jacksonville, FL, Logan Carrell of Jacksonville,FL; two sister-in-laws, Jeri Prescott of Ames, IA, Bette (Pat Hindman) Conkin of Marion, IL; her nieces and nephews, Scott (Sara) Prescott of Powell, WY, Gena (Cheria) Wolgamott of Melbourne, IA, Alexandra (Greg Yucha) Wolgamott of Durango, CO and William Wolgamott.
There will be a celebration of her life on Friday, January 6, 2023 at 11:00AM at First Presbyterian Church in Fernandina Beach, FL. She will be interred at the columbarium on the church property.
Donations may be made in her memory to First Presbyterian Church of Fernandina Beach, Florida. The family wishes to thank Community Hospice for their loving care and support.
