On behalf of Fernandina Beach Class of 1957 we are sadden to hear the loss of Jerrel and continue to mourn his passing. He was joy to be around, great sense of humor, flexible, and a beloved class-mate. While he will be missed, he will never be forgotten. Rest in peace

Jerrel Joseph Johns

Jerrel Joseph Johns, 83 of Yulee FL, passed away on Friday, February 4, 2022, at his home.

Born on April 7, 1938, in Callahan FL, the youngest child of Thelma Ida Jones Johns and Arthur Johns. He grew up in Yulee, FL and graduated from Fernandina Beach High School in 1957.
After graduation Jerrel began working at Terminal Paper Bag Company. He started out in the storeroom and worked his way into the shop as a machinist. He retired in 2000 with 44 years of service.

Jerrel enjoyed staying busy. You would often find him busy in his garden or doing yard work with his tractor. He enjoyed cooking and took pride in his family famous baked beans.

Jerrel was preceded in death by his parents Thelma and Arthur Johns, his brother David Johns and two sisters: Thelma Phifer and Alice Walker.

He is survived by his daughters: Jennifer Jenkins (Morris) of Jacksonville, FL, Cynthia Evatt of Chadbourne, NC; sons: Steven Sowell and Michael Sowell of Yulee, FL.: Grandchildren; Zachary Sowell, Matthew Thornton, Julianna Evatt, Cheyenne Jenkins, Madison Thornton, Kamryn Jenkins, and Alissa Jenkins; brother: Celester (Janna) Johns of Chickasha, OK, numerous nieces and nephews and his 4-legged best friends Leland and Hollister.

A celebration of his life will be held on Thursday, February 10, 2022 at the Burgess Chapel of Oxley-Heard Funeral Home. Visitation will be held at 10:00 a.m. followed by a service at 11:00 a.m.

He will be laid to rest in Hughes Cemetery.
